Abstract:
A fuel cell stack that includes a gas diffusion media for the end cells in the stack that has less of an intrusion into the flow field channels of the end cells that the other cells, so as to increase the flow rate through the flow channels in the end cells relative to the flow rate through the flow channels in the other cells. A different diffusion media can be used in the end cells than the nominal cells, where the end cell diffusion media has less of a channel intrusion as a result of diffusion media characteristics. Also, the same diffusion media could be used in the end cells as the nominal cells, but the end cell diffusion media layers could be thinner than the nominal cell diffusion media layers. Further, a higher amount of pre-compression can be used for the diffusion media in the end cells.
Abstract:
A system for a fuel-cell subgasket active area edge with through-plane proton conduction is provided. The system includes a fuel-cell membrane-subgasket assembly. The assembly includes an active area including a proton exchange membrane and a first portion of a transitional proton-conductive material attached to the proton exchange membrane. The assembly further includes a non-active subgasket boundary surrounding the active area, configured for preventing a flow of gaseous material and liquid material therethrough. The non-active subgasket boundary includes a non-conductive subgasket and a second portion of the transitional proton-conductive material attached to the subgasket.

Abstract:
A fuel cell system and associated method of operation includes assembling a fuel cell stack including an exhaust valve, flowing a premixed gas containing carbon monoxide therethrough; and closing the exhaust valve, including prior to storage. Subsequently, the exhaust valve may be opened and a refresh operation may be executed to purge the carbon monoxide from the fuel cell stack.
Abstract:
The present disclosure provides an integrated fuel cell having a water vapor transfer region wherein the integrated fuel cell includes a first bipolar plate, a second bipolar plate, and a membrane electrode assembly (MEA) disposed between the first and second bipolar plates. The membrane electrode assembly further includes a water vapor transfer portion and at least one active area portion configured to generate electricity and provide a water byproduct upon facilitating a reaction involving an input stream containing hydrogen and an input stream containing oxygen.
