Abstract: 989,893. Purifying salt water. HALCON INTERNATIONAL Inc. Jan. 23, 1962 [Jan. 23, 1961], No. 2440/62. Heading F4H Apparatus for use in refrigerating a liquid, e.g. in purifying salt water, comprises an enclosure 45, e.g. of concrete, formed with a shallow depression for containing a mixture of the liquid to be refrigerated and a liquid refrigerant and having a collapsible upper part 40 of gas-tight sheet material, e.g. neoprene impregnated nylon fabric or silicone elastomer impregnated glass fabric, inlet pipes 22, 36 respectively for the liquid to be refrigerated and the refrigerant, an outlet pipe 24 below the liquid level for a mixture containing refrigerated liquid, and an outlet pipe 33 above the liquid level for vaporized refrigerant, the edges of the upper part 40 being within and near upwardly extending sides 45a of the enclosure 45 to provide for a liquid seal 65. A propeller 43 agitates the mixture. The enclosure 45 may be formed in a number of compartments each with a collapsible upper part (Fig. 4, not shown), or a single compartment enclosure may have the upper part in several sections joined and anchored by bolts at the sides and floor of the enclosure (Fig. 5, not shown). The whole apparatus may be insulated e.g. with polyurethane foam. The apparatus is shown at 23, Fig. 6, in a system for purifying sea or other salt water. Brine passes through a vacuum-type deaerator 11 to parallel coolers 16, 17 and then to a further cooler 21 before entering the evaporator or " crystallizer " 23 where it is partly frozen by direct contact with evaporating butene-1 or similar refrigerant. The resulting brine and ice slurry passes to a continuous moving belt filter or to a centrifugal separator 25 where the ice crystals are separated and washed to remove residual brine before passing to a chamber 27 for melting the ice by the condensation of compressed refrigerant vapour. The resulting fresh water passes through the cooler 17 and is stripped of refrigerant before storage or use. The brine from the separator 25 cools the coolers 21 and 16 before being stripped of refrigerant and dumped.
