Abstract: In a data monitoring system, input terminals are selectively connectable each to any one of a number of data channels of different types and provide indications of the channels to which they are connected. A monitor for physiological variables comprises a number of input channels which are scanned in turn cyclically to receive and process signals from transducers to measure body temperature, resipration rate, blood pressure and pulse rate. Each channel has four lines only some of which will receive signals depending on the type of signal produced by the transducer currently plugged into the channel. As each channel is scanned, the appropriate processing for its signals is selected by logic circuitry in accordance with the presence/absence of signals on two of the four lines of the channel. The temperature transducer uses a thermistor to produce a D.C. voltage which is digitised by the monitor by incrementing a counter until an analogue voltage equivalent to the counter reading equals the input D.C. voltage. Respiration rate is measured by feeding the pulses produced by a thermistor, on which the patient is breathing, to the counter for 30 seconds. Blood pressures are measured by cutting off the flow of blood by pressurising an arm or finger cuff, and then reducing the air pressure in the cuff. Flow of blood past the restriction is detected by means of variations in the transmitted intensity of light shone through the finger (in the case of a finger cuff) or mechanical movements of the arm cuff (detected by a pivoted arm, mirror and photocell), produced by the ebb and flow of blood as the heart beats. The voltage from a strain gauge measuring the air pressure in the cuff is digitised as before when blood first gets past the cuff (giving the systolic pressure) and at the time of each subsequent systolic pulse of blood until the size of the pulses through the restriction (cuff) reaches a maximum (when the strain gauge reading gives the diastolic pressure). Blood pressure measurement is prevented if the cuff air is initially not up to pressure, and a single pulse from the blood-flow photocell is ignored. Pulse rate is measured by counting for 30 seconds the pulses produced by a photocell detecting light shone through the finger. Manual switches are provided to allow selected channels to be skipped during scanning. If the measured value of any variable departs from between preset upper and lower limits an alarm is given and the value printed out. Print-out is also caused every, 2, 5, 15, 30 or 60 minutes or all the time, as selected by a manual switch, and also whenever a key is pressed. Print-out of the counter readings from one complete scan of the input channels is accompanied by print-out of the time obtained from a resettable clock, and also digitisation of a check voltage and comparison of the result with a check standard.
