Abstract: A programmable electronic lock and key in which the key consists of a card having non-visible coded indicia thereon designating an address in memory and the contents thereof. The lock includes a card reader for scanning the coded indicia, memory means storing arbitrary patterns at designated locations; and means for comparing the scanned card data and the data extracted from the memory address specified by the card. A mismatch indicates a nonvalid key.
