Abstract: A programmable electronic lock and key in which the key consists of a card having non-visible coded indicia thereon designating an address in memory and the contents thereof. The lock includes a card reader for scanning the coded indicia, memory means storing arbitrary patterns at designated locations; and means for comparing the scanned card data and the data extracted from the memory address specified by the card. A mismatch indicates a nonvalid key.

Abstract: An elastic diaphragm switch is operated by moving a ribbon along a predetermined path obstructed by a bearing surface on a hammer. A projection on the ribbon presses against the bearing surface on the hammer, displacing the hammer against a spring supporting the hammer. Once the hammer is fully displaced, the ribbon passes beyond the bearing surface releasing the hammer to strike the elastic diaphragm of a switch, thereby momentarily closing the elastic diaphragm switch.
