Abstract:
Magnetic head elements are batch fabricated on areas of a substrate. During manufacture, and before final separation and processing of the areas into discrete multi-track magnetic heads, defective areas are identified for removal. An electric signal source subjects the head areas to a magnetic field which is detected as electric current in each head area. The detected current value in acceptable head areas falls within a predefined range. All head areas having a current outside the range are defined as defective. The magnetic field emanates from one set of head areas in the vicinity of another set of head areas being tested.
Abstract:
A magnetoresistive (MR) head with an unusually desirable spatial resolution includes a shield on each side of the MR element. Information is carried on a magnetizable medium as recorded magnetic areas. The shields are spaced apart by a distance on the order of and less than the shortest recorded wavelength for which the head is meant to be used. The MR element and the shields have their edges nearest the medium in a common plane perpendicular to the vertical component of a signal from the recorded area. An additional shunt bias layer may be provided immediately adjacent and coextensive the MR element, and the head may serve one or many tracks.
Abstract:
Magnetic-recording tape disposed on a rotatable spool in a cartridge is pneumatically loaded into first and second tape storage chambers. The first chamber is adjacent the tape exit portion of the cartridge and vacuum in such first chamber tends to pull the tape thereinto to the exclusion of the second chamber. To cause a tape loop to be formed in the second storage chamber, the second chamber (remote from the exiting portion of the cartridge) has an enlarged opening creating a greater pneumatic force to thereby attract the tape thereinto to the exclusion of the first chamber. Yieldable limiting means are provided in the second chamber as a reduced cross-sectional portion wherein the tape attracting force is equalized between the two storage chambers. Thereafter, the tape is loaded into the first chamber to the exclusion of the second chamber.
