摘要： An endless tape storage apparatus has a casing defining a chamber for storing the endless tape. The casing defines an inlet through which the tape is introduced and an outlet through which the tape is withdrawn. A movable section is associated with the inlet, storing the tape in folded form and transferring the tape toward the outlet. A stationary section is provided downstream of the movable section for decelerating the transfer speed of the tape and for adjusting accumulation of the transferred tape and feeding the tape toward the outlet in unfolded form.

摘要： A helical scan magnetic tape record/reproduce apparatus includes apparatus for changing the helix angle of magnetic tape relative to a rotary head scanner. A pair of elongate, arcuate air-bearing guides are disposed immediately adjacent and tangential to opposite sides of a circumferential surface of the rotary head scanner. The guides are at a first elevation and first angle and a second elevation and second angle, respectively, to cooperatively guide magnetic tape along a path at a predetermined helix angle while the magnetic tape is partially wrapped around the rotary head scanner. The planes of the air-bearing guides are changed in equal but opposite directions to change the helix angle of the tape relative to the rotary head scanner.

摘要： Pneumatically controlled apparatus serves jointly for automatically threading magnetic tape along a transport path past a magnetic transducer head external to a magnetic tape cassette, then transporting the tape along such path. Tape transport elements of the pneumatic-type--air-bearing guides, a vacuum capstan, etc.--are arranged, like the magnetic head, on the oxide surface side (the information-bearing surface) of the magnetic tape. To thread the tape, a vacuum source provides an air pressure gradient the effect of which is to draw tape, spanning a supply reel and a take-up reel, from the cassette in the form of an expandable loop which takes the shape of the transport path when the tape loop expands into operative engagement with each transport element and the transducer head. The transport elements further include a pair of concave air-bearing guides disposed immediately adjacent and tangential to opposing sides of the transducer head. The vacuum source, in cooperation with each air-bearing guide, provides the same air pressure gradient, used to thread the tape, to draw, and to thereby maintain, the tape adjacent the tape-guiding surface of each air-bearing guide during movement of the tape between the supply reel and the take-up reel.

摘要： A tape driving arrangement employs a plurality of tapes mounted on a drum in a manner enabling any selected tape to be positioned at a pick-up station. The free end of each tape is provided with lateral protrusions which enable the tape to be drawn through the reading zone of an input unit to a take-up reel by a mechanism that engages those lateral protrusions. That mechanism and the engaged lateral protrusions travel in paths on either side of the reading zone and thus avoid damaging the input unit. A rewind mechanism is provided to enable the tape to be rewound.

摘要： Methods and apparatus for advancing tape relative to an information transducing head with the aid of a tape drive capstan employ a first vacuum column at the tape drive capstan and a second vacuum column remote from the capstan. The tape is applied to the capstan and to the vacuum columns and is advanced with the capstan through the vacuum columns and in information transducing relationship with the head in an information transducing mode. The tape is removed from the first vacuum column and is disengaged from the capstan for a fast tape advance mode, while being retained in the second vacuum column. The tape is advanced in the fast tape advance mode only through the second column, and the fast tape advance mode is controlled with the second vacuum column.

In a constant tension web transport, web regulator ensures a relatively constant length of web between the transducing station and the one reel. In a preferred form the regulator is a vacuum chamber having a narrow web receiving opening and a wider cavity such that as the web forms a bight in the chamber into said wider cavity, air flows past the web to regulate bight size in accordance with web tension tending to maintain a constant web length.

摘要： Control apparatus for a tape recorder includes a Central Processor Unit (CPU) and a Control Panel having data entry switches, mode selection switches, speed selection switches, a multiposition function select switch and other controls and a display, all of which communicate with the CPU. The system enables the operator to enter commands to be executed by the CPU in controlling the tape transport at predetermined footage locations on the tape (such as Beginning of Data or End of Data) or at a predetermined value of parameters, such as tape pack diameters of the reel being emptied or filled (Beginning of Tape or End of Tape). The operator may enter data to set or change such locations or other parameter; and he may change commands in the CPU via the data entry switches. The operator may retrieve data or command signals from the CPU and view them on a display. A footage indicator is stored and continually updated in the CPU, and it may be changed to any desired footage setting by the operator. A wide range of operating speeds may be selected in the various modes of operation. Actual operating speeds during start-up and reversals are under program control until the speed set by the operator is reached. Under control of the CPU and at the direction of the operator, the system may thus be programmed to execute any one of a number of commands at predetermined but settable footage locations or tape pack dimensions.

摘要： A high performance self threading tape transport apparatus is packaged within a stand alone 19 inch wide frame. The tape transport apparatus includes a removable file reel and a machine reel. The removable file reel and the machine reel are arranged diagonally with a gravity assisted tape threading path. A single capstan is positioned adjacent the tape threading path with a pair of vacuum chambers situated one on each side of the capstan. The vacuum columns are offset relative to each other but incline to the tape threading path. A processing station including a magnetic transducer, is displaced relative to the tape threading path and operates to read magnetic data from the tape or to write magnetic data on the tape.
