摘要:
An inkjet ink composition having good stability which is an aqueous dispersion and/or solution of large particles of water soluble pigments derived from laked dyes, the water solubilizing groups on the surface of the laked dyes being exposed by removing surface counter-cations with chelating agents.

The present invention relates to ink-jet ink compositions that comprise modified pigment particles (macromolecular chromophores) having functional groups covalently attached for water solubility and reactive moieties covalently attached to the pigments. MMC with such reactive moieties attached can either a) react directly with cellulose or other textile material or, b) can participate in polymerization reactions. These reactive moieties may in turn be further derivatized to provide the desirable attribute, such as enhanced smearfastness, enhanced print quality, improved bleed control, and improved resistance to water when applied to the media. Moreover, inks formulated with these reactive MMCs demonstrate viscosity and surface tension characteristics that are useful in ink-jet printing. This includes thermal ink jet, piezoelectric ink jet, and continuous ink jet printing.

A method for dispersing a pigment in an aqueous solution is provided. The method comprises: (a) providing the pigment, which is distinguished in having an azo group and either a &bgr;-diketo structure or a hydroxyl group, each conjugatively associated with the azo group; (b) treating a surface of the pigment with a base having sufficient strength (e.g., a pKa of at least 6) to generate a negative charge on the pigment; and (c) reacting the negatively charged pigment with either (1) a first hydrophilic molecule containing at least one functional group comprising a carbon—carbon double bond and a carbonyl that is alpha to the carbon—carbon double bond which reacts via addition to form a hydrophilic group on the pigment or (2) a second hydrophilic molecule containing at least one functional group selected from the group consisting of anionic functional groups, cationic functional groups, and zwitterionic functional groups and at least one suitable leaving group which reacts via substitution to form a hydrophilic group on the pigment. The treated pigment is rendered comparatively soluble in water-based inks, thereby eliminating the need for any dispersant to disperse the pigment.

Two-part fixatives are provided in conjunction with overcoating at least one ink-jet ink printed on a print medium and comprise (1) at least one first reactive component comprising a reactive monomer or oligomer, the reactive species selected from the group consisting of iso-cyanates and epoxy-terminated oligomers, optionally in a vehicle, and (2) at least one second component selected from the group consisting of polyols and polyvinyl alcohols, plus one or more base catalysts, optionally in a vehicle. The two components and catalyst(s) are deposited on the print medium on which the ink-jet ink has been printed, and react to form a hydrophobic polymer overcoating the printed ink and having a glass transition temperature within a range of −20° C. to +50° C. and a melting temperature within a range of 30° C. to 100° C.

An aqueous ink-jet ink composition for printing on offset media is disclosed comprising an ink colorant, an effective amount of at least one surfactant, and an effective amount of at least one aprotic polar solvent wherein the solvent is comprised of molecules having a molecular weight from 40 to 1500. Optionally, an effective amount of a non-aprotic polar solvent can be added. The aqueous ink-jet inks of the present invention are effective for printing on many commercially available offset papers and other media.

The properties of ink-jet inks containing a colorant (pigment, macromolecular chromophore, or dye) are improved by adding thereto an additive, specifically, one or more polymers derived from unsaturated surfactants. The unsaturated surfactant(s) has at least one carbon-carbon double bond (C═C). The polymer may be simply an polymer of the unsaturated surfactant. Alternatively, the polymer may be co-polymerized with one or more vinyl monomers or one or more polymers based on the vinyl monomers may be mixed with the unsaturated surfactant polymer. The vinyl monomer(s) or polymer(s) are used to adjust or “tweak” the properties of the resultant polymer. For example, the more hydrophobic the polymer or the higher its molecular weight, then the greater the water-fastness afforded the ink-jet ink. The polymeric additive of the invention improves bleed control, water-fastness, and smear-fastness of ink-jet inks, particularly thermal ink-jet inks.

The ink of the invention comprises (a) a vehicle comprising (1) about 1 to 50 wt % of at least one organic solvent as humectants, and (2) about 0.01 to 20 wt % of at least one water-soluble surfactant or amphiphilic polymer (cationic, anionic, or non-ionic); (b) about 1 to 20 wt % of at least one partial chemically-modified, water-soluble colorant, the colorant having sufficient functional groups associated therewith to be substantially waterfast in deionized water while being sufficiently stable in the ink to avoid flocculation; and (c) the balance water. The use of a partial chemically-modified, water-soluble colorant (macromolecular chromophore) results in an ink that is both waterfast and non-flocculating.

A print medium having increased resistance to gasfade. An inhibitor comprising a sulfur-containing polymer is incorporated into the print medium. The sulfur-containing polymer is poly(1,4-phenylene sulfide) or poly(1,3-phenylene sulfide). The inhibitor is present in at least a surface of the print medium and may be present in the print medium in a concentration from approximately 0.25% by weight per cm2 of the print medium to approximately 30% by weight per cm2 of the print medium. A method of forming the print medium is disclosed as is a method of producing a printed image having increased resistance to gasfade.
