Abstract: An apparatus, system, and method for a waveguide system may be used to support eye tracking in a head mounted display (HMD). The waveguide system may be positioned in a user’s field of view and within a lens assembly of the HMD to capture light that is reflected from an eye. The waveguide system may have a number of multi-directional gratings configured to direct light to an out-coupling grating. The multi-directional gratings include first and second in-coupling diffraction gratings disposed in a waveguide. The first and second in-coupling diffraction gratings are oriented to direct incident light in multiple directions within the waveguide towards the out-coupling diffraction grating.

Abstract: The disclosed method may include providing, by a folding mirror region of a waveguide, two or more paths for light rays from an input mirror of the waveguide to an eye box of the waveguide. The method may also include supporting, by an output mirror of the waveguide, a field of view of at least sixty degrees by at least fifty degrees. The waveguide may correspond to a two-dimensional geometrical waveguide and the folding mirror region may fit entirely within a lens shape of the waveguide. Various other methods, systems, and computer-readable media are also disclosed.

The second diffraction grating may receive the light from the first diffraction grating in the waveguide and may be configured to out-couple the light from the waveguide onto an image sensor.
