Abstract: An endoprosthetic ankle joint device is provided including a tibial component in the form of a trough defining a concave surface and a talar component having a generally complementary convex surface which is received in the trough in mutual bearing engagement for articulation about the trough long axis. The concave and convex surfaces can have a cross-sectional profile which is wholly formed by revolution of said long axis, or partly so in the centre with rectilinear end parts, but in either case the included angle of this profile is larger for the concave surface. Also, these surfaces can be cylindrical with the profile curves of the same radius, or the convex surface can be convexly longitudinally curved to allow additional articulation orthogonal to the first articulation. In any case the trough ends provide stability in the longitudinal direction. The components can be secured to their respective bones with gap-filling cement by providing grooved or equivalent formations remote from the bearing surfaces.

Abstract: An endoprosthetic wrist joint device is provided having: a radial component formed by a tapered intramedullary stem with a part-annular, spherically-shaped socket at its wider end; a carpal component including a spherical ball with opposed flats allowing free entry into the radial socket for captive articulatory engagement therewith when twisted, and an elongated member joined to the ball by a neck to form a T-shape, such member having a longitudinal slot remote from the ball and of circular arcuate cross-section; and a plurality of metacarpal components each including a spherical ball slid into the slot and having a pin stem extending from the ball out of the slot.

Abstract: An endoprosthetic scapular glenoid component is provided with a concave bearing surface of elongated part-spherical shape significantly less than hemispherical extent. The surface forms the larger end face of a generally frusto-pyramidal body of which the side faces have a relieved structure for fixation in the scapular with gap-filling cement. The pyramidal body is preferably quadrilateral with two opposed planar side faces and the other two convexly rounded. For use in a total shoulder joint device, the glenoid component can be associated with a variety of generally spherically headed, intramedullary stemmed, humeral components. Preferably the humeral component head is of minor segmental form, and the stem inclined relative to the head over a major free end portion of its length.
