A liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate including a thin film transistor, a data line, a pixel electrode, and a common electrode, a second substrate, and liquid crystal sandwiched between the first and second substrates, wherein an image signal is applied to the thin film transistor through the data line to generate an electric field between the pixel electrode receiving the image signal and the common electrode such that the liquid crystal is rotated by the electric field in a plane which is in parallel with the first substrate. The first substrate includes an electrically insulating inorganic film covering the data line therewith, a first island-shaped electrically insulating organic film formed on the electrically insulating inorganic film above the data line, and a shield common electrode covering the first island-shaped electrically insulating organic film therewith and overlapping the data line when viewed vertically.

An in-plane switching mode active matrix type liquid crystal display device includes a first substrate, a second substrate located opposing the first substrate, and a liquid crystal layer sandwiched between the first and second substrates. The first substrate includes a thin film transistor, a pixel electrode, a common electrode, a data line, a scanning line, and a common electrode line. The scanning line and the common electrode line are formed in a common layer in parallel with each other. The common electrode overlaps the data line and the scanning line with an interlayer insulating film existing therebetween. The common electrode line is singly formed at either side about the scanning line. The common electrode is electrically connected to the common electrode line through a contact hole formed throughout the interlayer insulating film, and shields a gap formed between the scanning line and the common electrode line.

A liquid-crystal display (LCD) device improves the performance of preventing the elution of impurity contained in the light-shielding layer (and the color layer) of the monochrome or color filter into the liquid crystal, thereby preventing defective operations of the LCD device (e.g., displaying defect) caused by impurity existing in the liquid crystal. The LCD device includes the protection layer made of a transparent organic resin, which satisfies at least one of a condition (a) that the transparent organic resin has a cross-link density of 70% or greater, and a condition (b) that the transparent organic resin has a Vickers hardness of 50 kgf/mm2 or greater. Preferably, an amount of internal impurity of the filter is 3 ng/cm2 or less. It is preferred that at least one selected from the group consisting of an acrylic resin, a styrene resin, and a polyimide resin is used as a base or matrix material of the transparent organic resin.

In an active matrix liquid crystal display device, a drain and source of a TFT element for controlling power supply to a pixel electrode, are arranged so that an alignment direction of liquid crystal molecules over the source and drain does not change, thereby preventing formation of ghost images in the display. In one embodiment, an electric field generated between the source and drain is parallel to an initial non-zero alignment angle of the molecules.
