Abstract: An apparatus and method for uplink and/or downlink beamforming operation are disclosed. In one embodiment, each of a plurality of distributed secondary beamformer processors is associated with a respective region of an antenna array and associated with a respective beamforming submatrix. Each transmit or receive beamforming submatrix contains beamforming combining weights associated with antenna elements in the respective region of the antenna array. Further, each secondary beamformer processor uses the respective beamforming submatrix and a respective set of frequency-domain IQ data points (representing user data layers for transmission, or received FDIQ data from a corresponding set of transceiver ICs) to form a respective plurality of sets of beamformed frequency-domain IQ data points.

Abstract: A method and apparatus for multi-tier beamforming are disclosed. The method includes receiving a first-tier beamformed frequency-domain IQ data packet and a plurality of second-tier beamformed frequency-domain IQ data packets at a transceiver integrated circuit (IC) subarray. Each transceiver IC of the transceiver IC subarray (i) forms a multi-tier beamformed frequency-domain IQ data set by combining beamformed frequency-domain IQ data from the first-tier beamformed frequency-domain IQ data packet with beamformed frequency-domain IQ data from selected ones of the second-tier beamformed frequency-domain IQ data packets, (ii) generates a discrete-time-domain signal from the multi-tier beamformed frequency-domain IQ data set, and (ii) generates a modulated radio frequency (RF) signal from the discrete-time-domain signal. The method further includes transmitting a multi-tier beamformed signal by transmitting respective modulated RF signals from the transceiver ICs of the transceiver IC subarray via a corresponding adjacent antenna element subarray.

Abstract: In the case that several transmitting elements (e.g., a Tx chain) are simultaneously impaired, at least two different layouts are possible: the defected Tx chains are randomly scattered around the array; or, the defected Tx chains are aligned vertically on a random column (for 12 and 24 defected Tx chains—1 and 2 such columns are randomly chosen, respectively). It can be seen that the throughput is worse when the defected Tx chains are aligned in a column rather than randomly scattered, unless the defective Tx chains are known, in which case it is the opposite. This is because disabling an entire column has the most significant effect on the spatial null steering. When defected Tx chains are known the performance of all layouts are almost the same, though column yields slightly better results due to the antenna subarrays (2 vertical antennas have the same feed, therefore we lose less degrees of freedom).

Abstract: Transceiver integrated circuit (IC) subarrays, each transceiver IC subarray comprising at least a first transceiver IC and a second transceiver IC physically arranged in a subarray: the transceiver ICs configured to process series of commonly-processed aggregated signal-port IQ data packets in accordance with (i) beam-tilt information received in control message packets and (ii) the subarray position of the transceiver ICs, using one or more signal processing techniques to achieve electronic beam tilt selected from the group consisting of: (i) applying an incremental phase rotation to each subcarrier frequency-domain IQ data point (via, e.g., and NCO), (ii) applying a constant phase rotation to each subcarrier frequency-domain IQ data point (e.g., via a complex multiplication), (iii) applying a constant phase rotation to each sample of the baseband time domain signal (e.g., via a complex multiplication), and (iv) imposing time delays in the discrete time domain signals of the transmit baseband signals.
