Abstract: A gelatinizable crosslinked cationic starch especially suitable for paper sizing is produced by (1) reacting starch with an alkali-catalyzable crosslinking agent and the reaction product of the crosslinking agent with ammonia or with an amine and (2) depolymerizing the resulting cationic crosslinked product.
