    Abstract: A multiple strand driving chain is lifted into engagement with teeth carried on the endless belt of a conveyor by sprocket wheels which straddle the teeth. Preferably such multiple strand driving chains are incorporated into a modular drive unit where they are urged into engagement with the teeth on the top and bottom runs on both sides of the endless belt. Additionally, the teeth on the endless belt may be provided with a negative pitch angle whereby the multiple strand chain is drawn into and retained in engagement with the teeth on the endless belt throughout the distance between the sprocket wheels. The multiple strand driving chains are longitudinally adjustable with respect to the teeth on the moving belt.

    Abstract: The steps on a moving stairway are guided laterally by rollers bearing against the back of the skirts on either side of the stairway. The rollers are positively related to the steps to preclude an object from becoming wedged between the skirt and steps due to the effect of their relative movement.

    Abstract: A passenger conveyor is assembled from standard modular units which may be combined in the required numbers to fit any installation. The modular units for a moving stairway are fabricated with all of the components precisely aligned with respect to the tracks which guide the steps so that when the units are joined in the field no adjustment of the tracks is required. Standardized modular drive units are inserted into selected modules in accordance with the requirements of the particular installation.
