Abstract: An engineered bacterial strain expressing dehydrogenases capable of oxidizing D- sorbitol to 2-keto-gulonic acid is provided by the present invention. Methods of using same in a one-pot synthesis of L-ascorbic acid (vitamin C) are also described.
