A plate is carried by the drum adjacent a lower end thereof for movement between a closed position for cooperating with the interior of the drum for retaining the upturned earth therein and an open position for dispensing the upturned earth out of the interior of the drum at a predetermined location away from the hole being bored. A cutting member is carried on the plate for cutting the earth in a progressive slice and directing the earth into the drum, thereby boring the hole into the earth.

An single apparatus to drill and lift core specimens from an aggregate field includes a frame structure that can be deployed to a workface and is adapted to hydraulically deploy a rotating core drilling bit upon that workface to cut a core specimen from the substrate. The hydraulic deployment of the drill bit is self aligning and does not require complex alignment steps to ensure the maximum cutting efficiency and lifetime of the bit. The same apparatus that can be used to drive and deploy the drill bit can also be adapted to receive and lift the as-cut core specimen from the newly created hole in the substrate. Once lifted, the received specimen can be positioned out of the work area so that work within the newly created circular hole can progress.

A mining machine system for deep boring a hole in a seam includes a cutting head, a drill pipe, a power unit for driving the cutting head, a recovery mechanism for the fluidized conveyance of the aggregate coal or other mineral product from the bore hole and a blocking unit. The blocking unit includes a substantially cylindrical frame member that substantially conforms to the diameter of the hole being bored by the cutting head. Thus, the blocking unit serves to support the weight of the cutting head and drill pipe so as to maintain the proper alignment of the cutting head in the seam. The aggregate coal or other product may be conveyed from the bore hole adjacent the cutting head to the seam face either through a coal conveyance passageway in the drill pipe or through a separate coal conveyance pipe. In either embodiment a sealed pipe extending unit is provided to extend or advance the coal conveying pipe or drill pipe into the bore hole with the cutting head.

There is further provided a hydraulic cylinder arranged in the inner and outer hollow cylinders to move the center shaft telescopically, a set of parallel links connecting the outer hollow cylinder to each the cutter unit, and a link having a length one half of that of the parallel links for connecting a middle point of each lower link of the parallel links to a lower end of the inner hollow cylinder, thereby moving the cutter units radially toward and away from the center shaft by telescopically moving the outer and inner hollow cylinders relatively to each other by means of the hydraulic cylinder.

Pivoted cutter arms protrude from each side of the bucket and are held in the horizontal or cutting position preferably by heavy duty tension springs. The cutters are hollow or channeled and are angled to cut a groove or bell in the ground on rotation of the bucket and to lead spoil or rock cuttings into the interior of the bucket. The bucket may be provided with a bottom hinged door to facilitate removal of spoil from inside the bucket.
