Dynamically assigned labels can be provided by the visual display. Multitouch capabilities can be included that are responsive to additional contact, for example by other parts of a user hand. Displayed visual content, including visual content selection, motion, and sizing, can be controlled by a finger flick gesture. Finger movement trajectories can be tracked, and pluralities of control parameters can be associated with the finger flick gesture.

An apparatus and method for musical instruments with multiple vibrating elements where multiple-channel electronic signal handling and processing is used to produce diverse musical timbre, effects, and control. A plurality of vibrating elements are coupled, individually or in distinct possibly overlapping groups, to sense transducers which are in turn used to drive signal processors and/or vibration stimulating drive transducers. Sense transducer signals may be mixed prior to signal processing and signal processor outputs may be mixed prior to final system output. All mixing and signal processing can be controlled dynamically, and/or by pre-programming. The invention provides for drive transducers to be electromagnetic and/or piezo, for visual indicators (such as LEDs) to show the activity of each drive transducer, and for the drive transducers to be fed signals from an external source. The invention also provides for overtones in signals from sense transducers to be used to derive control signals for controlling synthesizers, lighting, signal processors, etc., for example via MIDI.

This invention provides a signal processing and signal synthesis technique from a family of signal processing and signal synthesis techniques designed to readily interwork or be used individually in creating new forms of rich musical timbres. Amplitude-envelope controlled time-modulation and pitch-modulation are employed to add rich and attention-getting aspects to solo lines and chords. The amplitude envelope may be measured from the signal being modulated, a delayed version of this signal, or another signal source. Modulation characteristics and parameters may be recalled from stored program control or modulated in real-time by arbitrary control signals, including those derived from the original input signal. The invention may be used individually or in conjunction with other signal processing and signal synthesis techniques in creating new forms of rich musical timbres. The invention may also be used in spatially-distributed timbre construction.

Electronic control can also be made with foot switches or incoming MIDI control signals. These controls may be used individually or in combination. Keyboard keys may be provided with key-travel sensors, key-surface sensors, or other sensors for continuously controlling volumes and octave mixings of subgroups of individual strings. Incoming MIDI control signals may also be used for controlling volumes and octave mixings of subgroups of individual strings. Outgoing control signals, such as MIDI, may be generated responsive to the plucking and/or the amplitude of and harmonic structure in the ongoing vibration of individual strings.

Detection operations performed on the envelope of an applied audio signal may include level detection operations, rate sign (i.e., level increasing versus decreasing) detection operations, and rate magnitude detection operations. These operations may control rich layered audio signal processing environments and/or audio synthesis environments directly, while other embodiments may incorporate the use of state machines in the control chain. The applied audio signal may be pre-processed by signal processing before application to envelope detection, and combinations of such envelopes may be used. Hysteretic effects may be invoked across increasing and decreasing variation in envelope parameters.

A miniature keyboard and strumpad may be provided in the picking area to control synthesizers and produce MIDI output. Strumpad operation can be controlled with chord buttons, foot pedals, or other physical controller devices. Physical controllers, string vibration, and other types of control devices may also be used to generate MIDI output.

East Asia's unique musical instruments and traditions have sadly been increasingly loosing favor to Western music and musical instruments. This invention intends to help reverse this trend by melding cutting-edge Western-music technologies with the noble innovations, timbre, playing techniques, and performance environments of, for example, East Asian musical instruments and traditions. East Asian stringed instruments may be fitted with separate pickups for each string for amplification, music synthesizer interfacing, separate string electronic pitch shifting, exotic signal processing, etc. Examples include the Japanese Koto, Chinese Sheng, Vietnamese Koto, Chinese Pipa, Japanese Biwa, and other similar instruments. Additional devices and structures, such as strain gauges, electronic strumming pads, miniature keyboards, harp, bass, or sympathetic strings, percussion impact sensors, and electronic music control switches, sliders, and buttons may be included. Video cameras may be attached to an instrument, and may be used as an instrument itself in conjunction with hand gestures. Any of the above may be used to control lighting effects as well as sound electronics.

Each physical controller may include a separate visual display of assigned name, status, and/or value. Rocking foot pedals may be used to simultaneously control multiple parameters by inclusion of aditional sensors. Each physical controller may be assigned specific control message functions, values, names, temporal event sequences, and invocation rules dicated by assignable state-machines. Assignments may be selected from organized structures via the physical controller elements. Physical controllers and assignments may be organized in hierarchical or other relationships rich in geometric metaphors usefuls for human operation. The control system accommodates MIDI and non-MIDI control signal implementations.
