The invention concerns an NMR (nuclear magnetic resonance) high field magnet coil system comprising superconducting conductor structures for generating a homogeneous magnetic field B0 in a measuring volume (23) with several radially nested solenoidal coil sections (12, 13, 31), which is characterized in that the radially innermost coil section (31) is wound with a band-shaped superconductor with an aspect ratio (width to thickness) >3 on a coil support which axially projects, at least at one axial end, past the winding packet of the radially neighboring coil section (12) and the band-shaped superconductor is guided on this side tangentially towards the outside to a region of reduced magnetic field strength and terminates in at least one electrical connecting point (16). This permits use of a brittle band-shaped superconductor for the innermost coil system (31) which cannot be strongly bent at the upper edge.

A magnet coil arrangement comprising an actively shielded superconducting primary circuit (21) comprising first and second magnet windings (1,2,3 and 4,5), and being wound e.g. in winding chambers (7,8,9 and 10,11) in a supporting body (6a,6b) for generating a strong magnetic field in a working volume with a small magnetic stray field and a short circuited secondary circuit (22) which is inductively coupled with the primary circuit (21) and contains third and fourth magnet windings (13,14,15 and 16,17) is characterized in that the magnet windings (13,14,15 and 16,17) of the secondary circuit (22) form an actively shielded magnet coil. This permits a simple and robust coil protection for actively shielded superconducting magnets during a quench wherein the superconducting magnet windings are reliably relieved and the magnetic stray field of the entire arrangement remains small.

A uniform stiffness laminated composite shell assembly includes a plurality of composite shells. The shells are made of layers of laminates of graphite-epoxy material having fibers oriented in various stacking sequences for performing different functions in the assembly. The shells are concentrically assembled in a desired sequence with some of the adjacent ones of the shells being at least equal to or greater in axial length than others thereof and with some of the shells being adapted to perform a structural load bearing function while others of the shells being adapted to perform a load transfer function. The desired sequence of shells of the composite shell assembly provides enhanced thermal insulating properties and efficient load distributing properties for enabling use of the assembly as a tube suspension in a superconductive magnet.

An electric transformer comprising a primary coil and a secondary coil each constituted by at least a first coil formed by winding one or more metal-matrix superconductive conductors. The first coil of the primary coil or of the secondary coil is connected in series with at least one second coil formed by a solid superconductive tube machined to form a solenoid, the second coil being disposed coaxially with the first coil. This design contributes to protecting the transformer by means of its current-limiting effect.

A laminated composite shell assembly includes composite shells assembled together and having joint bonds connecting the assembly with an external structure and pinch rings assembled to the shells adjacent the joint bonds so as to reinforce the same. The composite shells and pinch rings are cylindrical in configuration and made of layers of graphite-epoxy material having fibers oriented in desired stacking sequences. The shells and pinch rings are concentrically assembled in a desired sequence with some of the shells being adapted to perform a structural load bearing function while others of the shells are adapted to perform a load transfer function and with the pinch rings adapted to perform additional stiffening as well as load redistributing and transfer functions in the regions of the joint bonds between the assembled shells and the external structure.
