A method is provided for operating a multi-bandwidth OFDMA system that can achieve an enhanced bandwidth efficiency due to windowing without significantly impacting the underlying physical design of the receive filters. The method comprises establishing a bandwidth over which the radio resources transmit signals, the bandwidth being comprised of an edge-band and a center-band. Narrow band radio resources are assigned to a portion of the bandwidth that is at least partially within the edge-band.

A method for controlling communications between a mobile device and a pair of base stations during a soft hand off mode of operation in a wireless system using HARQ is provided. In the soft hand off mode of operation, the mobile device communicates with a plurality of base stations and receives a plurality of feedback signals in the form of NACK and ACK signals from each of the plurality of base stations. The mobile device determines the reliability of each of these feedback signals, combines the reliable signals, and retransmits the old information if no ACK signals are received. On the other hand, the receipt of even one reliable ACK signal results in new data being delivered to the plurality of base stations.

A method for controlling the flow of information between a UE and a Node B is provided. The UE transmits over a control channel to the Node B a signal requesting to transmit information to the Node B. The Node B uses information regarding a delay, such as a propagation and/or processing delay, associated with the UE to schedule the transmission of data. The UE then receives over a shared channel from the Node B a signal identifying a time at which the UE is permitted to transmit information. Thereafter, the UE transmits at the identified time over a data channel to the Node B a signal containing the information.
