A dialysis device of the type including a stack of parallel membrane support plates and membranes. A casing encloses the top, bottom and two opposing sides of the stack with the casing formed of two plastic molded interchangeable parts. Each casing part comprises a base member and a pair of integrally formed arms extending from opposite sides of the base member. The two parts are connected so that the pair of arms extending from one base member is sonic welded to the other base member, enabling a pressure fit that is suited to the stack that is being enclosed by the casing.Each base member includes hollowed-out portions defined by ribs with an overlying plate scan-welded thereto to form a sealed, rigid unit that is efficient to manufacture.

An improved valving system is provided in a dialysis system in which the dialysis solution flow path through the dialyzer may be sealed off adjacent the inlet and outlet of the dialyzer, with the pumped dialysis solution being shunted so that the pump and heater do not need to be turned off. As ultrafiltration takes place over a predetermined period of time, it can be directly measured by monitoring the liquid level of a reservoir connected to the sealed portion of the dialysis solution flow path. The dialysis unit itself is held in a bracket which defines the valving system by means of a longitudinally movable and clampable retention member for bearing against the top of and holding the dialyzer member.

A diffusion device is disclosed made from a stack of pairs of semi-permeable membrane walls and plate members positioned between adjacent membrane wall pairs for support thereof. Flow conduits extend transversely of the stack in communication with flow passages between the membranes or between each membrane and each adjacent plate member. In accordance with this invention, staging means are provided for directing fluid in the flow passages successively along different membrane wall pairs to lengthen the fluid path of flow for improved diffusion. The staging means comprises an occluding member in the transversely extending flow conduits, positioned to redirect flow received from along one membrane wall pair along another membrane wall pair.

A device for separating low density materials such as gas bubbles from a liquid is disclosed which comprises a chamber defined by an inner wall which in turn defines generally circular, transverse cross-sections about a longitudinal axis. The liquid inlet port extends through the inner wall in a position to pass liquid into the chambers circumferentially about the inner wall for swirling flow within the chamber. Accordingly, lower density components of the fluid, such as bubbles, migrate away from the inner wall toward the center of the swirling flow. An outlet port extends through the inner wall, and is spaced from the inlet port, to collect fluid which is free from the low density materials.
