    摘要: A multifilar flexible rotary shaft includes a plurality of individual filaments which are not wound around each other or around a central core, a loose ensemble of filaments. The input ends of each filament are coupled to each other and the output ends of each filament are coupled to each other. Preferably all of the filaments are identical. A loose ensemble of N filaments can transmit N times the torque of a single filament, and will have N times the torsional stiffness of a single filament, while retaining the minimum radius of operation of a single filament. Since a loose ensemble of filaments does not have any appreciable contact forces among the filaments (because they are not forcibly twisted together), there is no appreciable internal friction or hysteresis. In order to appreciably eliminate all the hysteresis in such an ensemble of filaments, the filaments should be no more than loosely twisted together, if at all. The only reason for loosely twisting the wires together is to allow the ensemble to be easily handled and to insure that the individual wire filaments follow the same general curved path from one end to the other. Several practical applications of the invention are also disclosed.

    摘要: A surgical trocar has three integral single beveled blades having cutting edges which, when viewed head on, resemble a Y configuration. The distal end of each blade is formed with a leading cutting edge and a single trailing edge which define a single beveled face. The blades are arranged so that their leading edges converge to form a sharp point at the distal end of the trocar with the leading cutting edges extending proximally and radially from the point. The trocar is preferably extruded with three fins which are shifted relative to the longitudinal axis of the extrusion such that at most a first side of each fin lies along a ray from the longitudinal axis of the extrusion. Alternatively, both sides are shifted to one side of the longitudinal axis. The distal end of each fin is then ground to form a single bevel with at least a portion of the cutting edge of the beveled fin lying in a plane which includes the longitudinal axis of the extrusion and being angled proximally. The fins are preferably spaced at 120.degree. intervals from one another about the longitudinal axis of the extrusion. The extrusion is preferably stepped proximal of the cutting edges to form a descending step for stopping the distal movement of a spring biased safety shield. The fins may be ground using the same machine used to grind a pyramidal trocar tip and will result in cutting edges with half the angle of the cutting edges of the pyramidal tip.

    摘要: According to the invention there is provided an intravascular catheter comprising an elongated flexible jacket having opposed proximal and distal ends and a central passageway extending between and interconnecting the ends. A rotating working head is located at the distal end of the jacket. A flexible drive cable extends through the passageway of the jacket, having a driving end operatively connected to the working head for rotating it, and a driven end operatively connected to a high-speed motor. The working head is rotatably mounted in a bearing sleeve which is further attached to the catheter jacket. The working head is actuated, by a actuator which adjust the a pair of tip portions from an at least initial retracted position with a first effective working diameter to an extended position with a second effective working diameter greater than the first effective diameter. Centrifugal forces generated by rotation of the cable cause the tip portions to assume the greater effective working diameter.
