The invention includes improvements in the method and apparatus of handling and storing dry materials in storage vessels. Among the many improvements of the storage vessel is a fluidized bed that is fabricated with one or more fixed zones to fluidize the dry powder-like material that is stored directly on and above each zone. Each zone, or compartment of the fluidized bed, will be pressurized independent of the other zones with high-volume, low-pressure air in a specific sequence, via a simple air distribution device, to ensure that the contents in the vessel is accurately discharged on a first-in, first-out basis. In addition to the controlled discharge method using a zoned, fluidized bed, the silo may also be equipped with an oversized, filter-vent top to more efficiently filter the material and air as they are conveyed and filled in the silo. The oversized, filter-vent top may be large enough to eliminate the use of a dust collector that is generally used with these types of bulk handling systems. Other improvements include a flexible and smooth (seamless) interior wall surface, the use of inexpensive, commodity type (carbon-steel) wall panels, easily accessible inspection and clean-out ports and a quick-change method and device for removing and or replacing the zoned, fluidized bed assembly.

Apparatus for handling loosefill and conveying the loosefill from one location to another comprises a container having a bottom and sides, the container being adapted to receive and contain therein a quantify of loosefill, a blower positioned at one end of the container and conduit which channels air from the blower toward the other end of the container, and which redirects the air back toward the one end of the container to thereby convey therewith the loosefill. A vacuum is positioned at the one end of the container which draws the loosefill out of the container. The container may be a trailer of a tractor trailer. A method of conveying loosefill from one location to another comprises providing a container of loosefill, providing an air source at one end of the container, directing air from the air source toward the other end of the container, and redirecting the air back towards the one end of the container to thereby convey therewith the loosefill to the one end of the container.

An aerator pad assembly having an aeration pad with a number of cutouts forming a shaped perimeter, is provided. The aeration pad may include a number of supports providing which provide air flow paths between the aeration pad and an associated aeration panel. A gasket may be disposed about the shaped perimeter, the gasket having a plurality of protuberances with fastener openings included, and the protuberances preferably cooperate with the cutouts to form a generally continuous interface between them. In one embodiment, a notched opening within the gasket is provided at the generally continuous interface with the shaped perimeter at least partially occupying a portion of the notched opening. In a particular embodiment, the gasket may be molded onto the aeration pad. In another embodiment, an adhesive material may be provided to form the attachment. In yet another embodiment, stitches of thread may attach the gasket and the aeration pad. A sealant material may also be provided at the generally continuous interface to seal voids between the gasket and the pad.

A silo for pulverulent and other loose materials of the type that has a base formed in part by a centrally located, inner conical dome. The silo has a vertically oriented material withdrawal conduit through which the loose materials are withdrawn from the silo. The conduit has an upper end located approximately at the apex of the inner conical dome, and the silo is constructed so that approximately two thirds of its stored contents can be withdrawn by gravity from the lower end of the material withdrawal conduit. The silo may also utilize a plurality of angularly spaced material transport conduits passing radially inward, with a first end of said conduits being located at material outlet points located within the silo body near the inner silo wall and a second end of each of said conduits located at a centrally located collection point within the silo body. The conduits will preferably utilize a dense phase conveying system that utilizes gravity to provide the pressure head to transport material.

A self acting pressure air pulse control valve for use with fluidizing and pneumatic conveying systems for dry particulate material comprises a housing having a chamber in which a plate type closure member and an actuating piston are disposed and interconnected by an elongated actuating rod. A spring engages the actuating rod through a pivotally supported lever and biases the closure member toward a closed position. Pressure air acts across the face of the closure member to allow the valve to crack open whereupon pressure air acting on the larger actuating piston face snaps the valve to the fully open and unrestricted flow position. A reduction in pressure of the air flowing through the valve allows the biasing spring to reclose the valve to repeat its operating cycle.

A fluidation kit for retrofit installation on a pneumatic outlet for a railway covered hopper car is disclosed. The outlet includes an outlet pan having downwardly sloping walls. The kit includes at least one air permeable fluidizing membrane on the inside face of the outlet pan wall to fluidize a powdered or pulverant lading. An externally mounted manifold assembly is attached to outside surfaces of the outlet pan for connecting the air permeable fluidizing membranes on the inside surfaces of the downwardly sloping walls of the outlet pan to a source of fluidizing air. The air permeable fluidizing membrane is supported in a peripheral extending frame member which supports the air permeable fluidizing membranes a small predetermined distance above the sloping wall surfaces to provide a plenum therebetween for diffusing fluidizing air throughout the entire extent of the air permeable fluidizing membrane. The air permeable fluidizing membrane is preferably constructed from a woven polypropylene fiber having a desired range of mesh sizes which provides a desired air permeability for fluid pressure unloading of powdered or pulverant ladings.

A second porous element formed from a perforated sheet having a second total predetermined perforation cross-sectional area is disposed parallel to the first porous element and spaced a predetermined distance therefrom. At least one intermediate porous element is interposed the first porous element and the second porous element. The intermediate porous element has a total predetermined cross-sectional pore area which is less than the first and second total predetermined cross-sectional areas. Each of the porous elements are bonded to adjacent porous elements to form an integral structure, whereby the intermediate porous element regulates the flow of gas through the porous composite structure while the first and second porous elements mechanically strengthen the porous composite structure. A method of producing the porous element is also disclosed.
