To correct the beam direction, and thus the color purity of color television tubes, particularly in tubes having fixedly secured deflection systems (10), the deflection field is, upon adjustment for color purity, additionally modified by introducing a unidirectional magnetic field extending with its field lines parallel to the z-axis of the tube. After adjustment to move a predetermined color, for example red, from non-deflected or hardly deflected central beam positions into the center of the CRT, the d-c unidirectional field is then disconnected, and the apertured mask demagnetized, as conventional. For demagnetization, the already present demagnetization coil (9) on the tube may be used, by applying a constant voltage thereto, for example of 12 V. The decaying demagnetizing field can be derived from a transformer connected to network power (FIG. 2) or through an oscillatory circuit formed by a charge capacitor (17).

Intensifier tubes for x-rays or low-light levels form an image of photoelectrons which is focused on a fluorescent viewing screen. Stray magnetic fields, including the earth's field, bend the electron trajectories and distort the image. Magnetic shielding has been used around the tube, leaving the image-receiving end open. Magnetic field leaking through the open end is reduced by extending the end of the shield around the image-receiving aperture inward and forward of the edge of the tube.

A color purity adjusting device for a color picture tube, provided with one or more types of correcting coils which are wound on the outer periphery of the color picture tube in order to correct any mislanding of an electron beam due to deformation which might take place during the manufacturing process of the color picture tube, such as, a distortion of a shadow mask or of a glass bulb and to correct any mislanding of the same due to the influence of same external magnetic field such as the earth''s magnetism, thereby to obtain a picture of improved color purity.
