Abstract: An apparatus and method directed to a stowaway pintle hitch that is simple to manufacture and use having novel height adjustment means, retainer, retainer lock, and stowaway pivoting motion. The apparatus may have a swiveling mount that is free to swivel while towing a trailer. A cushioning spacer is disclosed for reducing impact forces and noise in pintle hitch towing systems. In certain embodiments an apparatus in accordance with the invention may have a trunnion for insertion into a receiver tube or cavity of a vehicle. A base may be secured to the trunnion or to the vehicle. The base may also have a mount secured thereto. The mount may have a platform that is sized and positioned to receive a hitch. The mount may also have a retainer that may be moved into position and locked in order to prevent removal of a pintle ring from around the hitch. The retainer may be mounted on a pivot allowing it to rotate into and out of position. It may also be mounted on a guide such that it may translate relative to the mount. Through rotation and translation, the retainer may be moved to positions suitable for temporarily holding the retainer and for locking the retainer into position. The retainer may be of very simple construction such as a substantially flat plate in which needed apertures and outlines are formed. The mount may be adjustable relative to the base. The apparatus may have another guide to enable the mount to translate relative to the base. This may allow the mount to be height-adjustable and provide versatility of operation. A swiveling mount may allow the mount to swivel relative to the base to accommodate the towing of trailers over rugged terrain. A cushioning spacer made of suitable material may extend around a hitch and absorb impacts and dampen noise.

Abstract: A weight distributing hitch assembly includes a shank, hitch head, spring bar and lift assembly. The lift assembly is preferably removable mountable to the frame members of a trailer frame while the spring bar extends below the frame members relative to the ground. The lift assembly mounts a hanger assembly which engages a cantilevered segment of the spring bar to drive the spring bar from a free state to a loaded state to distribute the hitch load to a towing vehicle as well as to the trailer. A lever assembly mounts the hanger assembly to the lift assembly and supplies mechanical advantage to assist a user during tensioning of the spring bar. By moving the lever assembly, the cam rotates about a pivot. As the hanger assembly is engaged with the cam, the hanger assembly is driven from a disengaged position to an engaged position which moves the spring bar from its free state to its loaded state with a minimum of user effort.

Abstract: A trailer hitch guide assembly that effectively elevates and guides a forward end of a trailer hitch into coupling engagement with a vehicle hitch. The trailer hitch guide assembly of the present invention elevates the forward end of the trailer hitch and guides the forward end of the trailer hitch into alignment with a coupling of the vehicle hitch. When the trailer hitch engages a support arm of the guide assembly, the trailer hitch is lowered, wherein a coupling of the trailer hitch couples to the coupling of the vehicle hitch. Abstract: An under-bed mounting system installed beneath a cargo bed floor of a vehicle includes both a male pin and a female receptacle. A releasable locking mechanism is defined between the pin and the receptacle to permit installation and removal of desired components such as a fifth wheel hitch. The pin including opposing first and second ends and an intermediate portion, a groove being disposed within said intermediate portion and including a stem and a base portion. A portion of the receptacle is received within said groove, selectively contacting said stem during installation and contacting at least the base portion after said installation. In one embodiment, the groove of the pin is generally L-shaped, the receptacle including a rod that is selectively received in the groove. In a second embodiment the pin is a scissor clamp with opposing jaws pivotable about a common hinge. The jaws engage the inner periphery of the receptacle.

Abstract: An adjustable trailer hitch which provides an operator improved remote control of the lateral position of a trailer hitch, and simplifies the procedure of hooking a trailer to a tow vehicle. The trailer hitch comprises a hitch assembly (such as a ball receptacle) attached to a roller carriage which moves from side-to-side along a bumper-like housing. The roller carriage engages a positioning screw, and an electric motor mounted in a sealed end cap powers the positioning screw. Rotation of the screw translates into rightward or leftward lateral movement of the roller carriage and consequently of the ball receptacle assembly. Motion of the ball receptacle assembly is controlled via a wireless remote control unit. Such direct control over the precise lateral position of the trailer hitch enables the operator to accurately steer the trailer when traveling in reverse. During hook-up, lateral movement of the hitch enables the operator to connect the trailer and the tow vehicle from a greater range of positions, and eliminates the need for absolute accuracy of alignment between the tongue of the trailer and the hitch of the tow vehicle as required by traditional fixed hitches.

Abstract: A double-acting, weight distributing trailer hitch includes a drawbar assembly and a hitchhead assembly. The drawbar assembly is releasably connected to a tow vehicle and includes a first coupling component at its rearward end. The hitchhead assembly includes a second coupling component and a rearwardly extending drawbar extension, which are pivotably connected along substantially vertical axis by a yoke. The drawbar extension is pivotally connected to the yoke by a cam. The drawbar extension is also mounted pivotably to the hitch ball along a first horizontal axis that is transverse to the direction of travel. A rearward portion of the drawbar extension is pivotably interconnected to the trailer along a second horizontal axis, which is parallel to the first horizontal axis and located behind the hitch ball. This creates an overlap between the forward end of the trailer and the drawbar extension. A spring assembly dampens pivoting of the drawbar extension about the horizontal axes and thereby dampens hinging movement between the tow vehicle and trailer. The cam is operated to adjust the hitchhead so that a predetermined angle is imparted to the drawbar. The coupled tow vehicle and trailer operate essentially as a unified beam and resist relative hinging movement and resulting instability while driving along the highway. The spring also allows the tow vehicle and trailer to stably negotiate dips and bumps in the roadway at relatively low speeds.
