The subject spike has a rectangular shank having a front surface which faces the rail when the spike is driven into place, a back surface opposite the front surface and two side surfaces. There is a ledge on one side, perpendicular to the length of the spike. The ledge has a face facing the head of the spike and a distance from it such that when the spike is fully driven the ledge engages the underside of the plate which supports the rail. The other side of the shank is contoured to provide clearance for the ledge to pass through a standard sized hole in the plate and then to cam the spike sidewise to engage the ledge under the plate. This engagement attaches the rail flange to the plate and the spike helps attach both the rail and plate to the tie.

A rail spike for holding a tie plate on a tie, embodied in accordance with the invention so that tie cutting is prevented, spike removal for track maintenance is facilitated, and a free rail load wave is allowed. This preferably is attained by providing the spike with left and right side tapered shoulders and a tapered rear surface, such that a unique wedging and swaging action occurs in the tie plate hole during a final driving of the spike, limiting the depth of penetration of the spike into the tie and securely maintaining the gauge of the tie plate on the tie.

A railway spike consists of a bar folded to form first and second legs. Proceeding upwardly from the nose, formed by the two ends of the bar, firstly there is a first portion in which the legs are straight and parallel, then a second portion in which they diverge, then a third portion in which they converge, then a fourth portion in which they diverge again and finally a fifth portion which includes the uppermost part of the spike. When the first leg is on the left, no part of the fourth or fifth portion of the spike is further to the left than is the leftmost part of the first leg in the second and third portions. The spike may pass through a hole in a baseplate on which a rail stands, a resilient clip having a portion which bears downwardly on a flange at the bottom of the rail and having a further portion which presses upwardly on a flat surface at the bottom of the plate.

A railway track in which each sleeper is constituted by two tiebeams interconnected by a distance piece with the top surface of each tie-beam having a central rail supporting part, a depression at each side of this central part, and an area in relief outboard of each depression. The railway track also includes a clip system for securing the rail to the tie-beam which system comprises two U-shaped clips engageable under a headed bolt in each depression and engaging at its outboard end on a wedge and in its inboard end on an insulating spacing member lying on the bottom flange of the rail.
