Autoigniting compositions and processes for a gas generator of a vehicle occupant restraint system result in rapid autoignition at relatively low temperatures from approximately 135.degree. C. to 210.degree. C., thereby allowing the gas generator to operate at lower temperatures to facilitate use of an aluminum canister. The autoignition compositions of the present invention are safely manufactured by wet blending, remain effective following long-term high temperature ageing, and produce an energy output that is suitable for use with gas generating compositions.

The present invention provides a cellulose-based propellant for generating gas to inflate an air bag in a vehicle occupant restraint system. In one embodiment, the propellant includes cellulose in combination with an alkali nitrate oxidizer, such a potassium nitrate, and Kaolinite clay for increasing the viscosity of the residue resulting from combustion of the propellant. Also included in the present invention is a method for producing the propellant and incorporating the propellant into an air bag restraint system. In one embodiment of the method, cellulose fiber in the form of pulp board or wood pulp is soaked in a solution that includes an oxidizing agent to produce a slurry, the slurry is then formed into a sheet of a desired density, the sheet is then at least partially dried, if required, and then formed into a desired shape for incorporation into a vehicle restraint system that employs an air bag.

A composition which is capable of producing an obscuring white smoke is disclosed which employs a dicarboxylic acid as the primary smoke producing agent. It is found that by using a dicarboxylic acid smoke producing agent, a generally non-toxic and non-corrosive smoke is achieved. Also included within the composition are a binder, a fuel or coolant, and an oxidizer. The binder may be any one of a number of binders such as nitrocellulose or a polymer binder. A low energy fuel is preferred in order to minimize heat and flame produced. Such fuels may include, for example, starch, dextrose, lactose, sucrose, or sulphur. The presently preferred oxidizer is KCLO.sub.3. Other substances may also be added to the composition. For example, sodium bicarbonate may be added to act as a buffer for the KCLO.sub.3 and as a further coolant. In some cases it may also be desirable to add aluminum for purposes of producing more uniform burning and increased thermal conductivity through out the composition.
