    摘要: A spring-energized cylinder head combustion seal for positioning in an inwardly opening annular groove in a cylinder liner for sealing the interface between the cylinder liner and cylinder head so as to prevent leakage of combustion gases includes a C-shaped annular sheath which is disposed in contact with the bottom surface of the annular groove and the lower surface of the cylinder head. The second component of the seal assembly is a helically wound spring which is of an annular ring shape and disposed within the C-shaped sheath. The sheath and spring are positioned such that the opening in the C-shaped sheath opens directly into the cylinder and the seal assembly is exposed directly to the combustion gases and the higher or elevated temperatures which are present. The spring and C-shaped sheath are constructed of superalloy materials and the exterior of the sheath may be plated with soft metal so as to provide an enhanced metal to metal seal between the liner and cylinder head.

    摘要: Annular groove portions are formed in each of facing surfaces of a sealing portion of a processing vessel that is kept in an atmosphere of a prescribed gas or an atmosphere at a reduced pressure, and a thin annular plate is arranged in such a manner that it is sucked against the entire periphery of the opening portions of the annular groove portions. The annular groove portions are each connected to an exhaust device, and the facing surfaces of the sealing portion are sealed in a gas-tight manner by reducing the pressure in the annular groove portions so that the thin annular plate is sucked against the entire periphery of the openings of the annular groove portions. This configuration prevents the introduction of unwanted oxygen and moisture from the atmosphere into the interior of the processing vessel, and also provides a thermal processing apparatus which has a sealing portion that prevents the emission of gases and moisture at high temperatures.

    摘要: An improved expandable gasket, sealed joint and method of forming a sealed joint which includes a gasket having at least 5% by weight unexpanded or unexfoliated graphite. The graphite material is preferably a mixture of expanded and unexpanded graphite compressed in a sheet or other shape affixed to a metal plate. The preferred composition is 5 to 70% by weight of unexpanded graphite and 30 to 95% expanded graphite, wherein the percentage of unexpanded graphite is controlled to provide the desired gasket expansion. A more preferred composition includes at least 10% by weight unexfoliated graphite or more preferably 15 to 50% by weight. The gasket is placed between the surfaces to be sealed and clamped in place. When the joint is heated, the unexpanded graphite exfoliates, causing the gasket to swell or expand, tightly sealing the joint. The expandable gasket of this invention is particularly suitable for automotive application, including head and exhaust gaskets which are subject to temperatures exceeding about 400.degree. C.

    摘要: The invention is directed to an arrangement for sealing a clearance between a cylinder head and a cylinder block of an engine with a metal gasket clamped therebetween. The metal gasket is formed of a metallic base plate which has a plurarity of openings and beads formed therearound. The base plate may include annular shims welded on the base plate around the openings and a resilient sealing member deposited on the base plate surrounding the openings. The gasket may be disposed in such a manner as to place tip ends of the beads toward the cylinder block which causes a smaller displacement relative to the beads in comparison with the cylinder head. The resilient sealing member may be arranged to have a section of different dimension between a portion located at a side facing the beads and other portion at the opposite side thereof, or between a portion located at a junction where two of the beads meet and other portion.

    摘要: A gasket for sealing the connection between a cylinder head and a valve cover. The gasket has a sheet metal backbone having a main body with spaced stations having holes therethrough for cap screws fastening a valve cover to a cylinder head. A finger-like tab extends inwardly from the stations. Each tab has a cap screw hole at the distal end thereof, The tabs are bent back over the main body so as to be in contact with the spaced stations and with the holes in the tabs and stations in alignment. The backbone has a rubber based material subsequently molded therearound. The result of the folded construction is a double thickness of metal in the areas surrounding the cap screw holes to form positive stops to limit the compression loads applied to the rubber based seal of the gasket by the cap screws when the valve cover is fastened to the cylinder head. The compression loads are thereby limited and the gasket is protected from damage by excessive loads so that effective sealing and long service life is assured.

    摘要: Extrusion-resistant seal assembly for sealing a gap defined between a first structure spaced-apart from a second structure, which first structure and second structure may be an annular first flange and an annular second flange belonging to an instrumentation column of the kind typically found penetrating nuclear reactor pressure vessels. The seal assembly includes an annular retainer disposed in a gap defined between the first flange and the second flange, the first flange and the second flange capable of being moved into close proximity to reduce the gap therebetween. The retainer includes a first surface thereon having a first recess extending therearound. The retainer also has a second surface thereon having a second recess extending therearound. An annular first gasket is retained in the first recess and an annular second gasket is retained in the second recess. The first gasket intimately engages the first flange as the second gasket intimately engages the second flange to seal the gap when the first and second flanges are brought into close proximity and clamped together. The first and second gaskets resist extrusion as they are compressed between the flanges and as they are subjected to high fluid pressure because the gaskets are constrained within their respective recesses and because the retainer bears the compressive load. In this manner, the seal assembly seals the gap as the first and second flanges are brought into close proximity and clamped together.

    摘要: A method of sealing a high performance internal combustion engine with a head gasket having a fire ring comprising providing a groove in the head or block generally concentric with each said combustion opening, each groove having a land area and a generally vertical wall, and positioning the gasket on the block so that when the head is torqued down, each groove receives a fire ring and compresses the wire ring thereof to provide a primary seal therewith at the land area, the wall engages the armor of the fire ring to form a secondary seal, and the head and block clamping surfaces engages the armor to clamp the armor. The head gasket has a main body of a first thickness and defines a plurality of combustion openings. A fire ring is disposed and secured in each combustion opening, each fire ring comprising an armor ensheathing a wire ring for providing a combustion seal. The armor is of a second thickness substantially greater than the first thickness. The armor and main body may be intergrally formed. In use, the combustion seal provides a labyrinth seal against the spaced surfaces of the groove and against a corner defined by the groove.

    摘要: A seal assembly (21) is disclosed for use with a housing (H) which defines a fluid chamber (C) and a threaded opening (O). In threaded engagement with the opening is a threaded portion (13) of a device such as a sensor assembly (11 ). The housing defines a counterbore (CB) disposed axially between the threaded opening (O) and an external surface (S). The seal assembly (21) includes a metal support member (23) including a cylindrical portion (27) having inner (33) and outer (35) portions of elastomeric sealing material. The seal assembly is pressed into the counterbore and, by means of the interference fit therebetween, may be permanently retained therein. As the member is threaded into the opening, the underside (16) of the head (15) deforms a sealing lip (39) radially inward into engagement with the threaded portion (13). As a result, the threaded member may be removed and replaced by another, without loss of sealing function, and without the need to replace the conventional, prior art O-ring seal which would normally be retained on the threaded member.
