A medical diagnostic ultrasound real-time 3-D transmitting and imaging system generates multiple transmit beam sets using a 2-D transducer array. Each transmit beam set includes multiple simultaneous ultrasound transmit beams. The system acquires multiple receive beam sets in response to the transmit beams, and each receive beam set includes multiple simultaneous receive beams. A real-time, three-dimensional medical diagnostic ultrasound image is formed in response to these receive beams. Several techniques for reducing cross talk in such a system are discussed.

An ultrasonic imaging system and method provide a composite image having a near-field region and a far-field region that are displayed in a common imaging mode. The near-field region emphasizes received ultrasonic imaging at a harmonic of the fundamental of the transmit waveform, while the far-field region emphasizes received ultrasonic information at the fundamental frequency. In this way the advantages of harmonic imaging are obtained in the near-field without sacrificing penetration performance in the far-field.

The transducer elements supply receive signals to a receive beamformer, and the receive beamformer supplies output signals to a scan converter, which is controlled by a scan converter controller. The scan converter controller generates a control signal indicative of the configuration of the transducer elements, and the scan converter responds to this control signal to reduce image distortion associated with movement of the transducer elements between the first and second configurations.
