A method of roll packing a variety of compressible materials is provided which prevents the rotatable mandrel about which the materials are rolled from radially collapsing. The method further provides for easy removal of the roll packed material without tearing or-telescoping of the material. One embodiment of the present invention provides for wrapping a corrugated material around the rotatable mandrel prior to the compressible material being wrapped around the mandrel. In another embodiment, roll-packing material is laminated prior to being wound upon,the mandrel before the compressible material is wrapped around the mandrel.

The product has multiple sections of differing firmness attributable in part to differing heights of the pockets of the strings of springs. Filler is placed above the lower sections of the pocketed spring assembly.

Each of said strings of springs comprises a row of interconnected pockets, each of the pockets containing at least one spring encased in a fabric pocket and with more than one line of attachment between at least selected adjacent pockets. At least one spacer strip or at least one scrim sheet extends between the interconnected pockets of at least one string of springs and is secured thereto to provide stability in the pocketed spring assembly.

A bedding or seating product comprising a spring assembly made up of a plurality of parallel strings of springs joined to each other. Each of the strings of springs comprises a row of interconnected pocketed coil springs. Selected pockets of fabric are shorter than adjacent pockets, so coil springs in the selected pockets are under a greater load than adjacent coil springs. In one preferred embodiment, every other pocket is under a greater load than the adjacent pockets, resulting in a checkerboard arrangement in at least one area of the product.

Ink jet printing is provided onto rigid panels such as office partitions, which have surfaces that are contoured, textured or made of a fabric or other three-dimensional material, or are otherwise differently spaced from the plane of the panel such that the distance between a printing element and the point on the surface on which ink is to be deposited is not always the same or exactly predictable. Preferably, fabric covered panels are printed using ink jet printing, preferably using ultraviolet (UV) light curable ink, which is first, at least partially cured with UV light and then subjected to heating to more completely cure and dry the ink to remove, by evaporation or otherwise, the uncured monomers. The panel surface may be contoured by quilting or molding processes. Print head to panel spacing is adjustable to maintain a predetermined constant distance from the printing element to the surface of the panel where the ink is to be applied. A contact sensor such as a rolling element or a non-contact sensor such as a laser or other optical element may be used to produce a measurement, in response to which the spacing is adjusted. Alternatively, an initial measurement can be made and the contour of the surface followed by programmed control. A textured surface may be followed to within a millimeter, more or less, to optimize ink jetting distance. The position or focal length of the UV light curing head may also be varied to maintain focus of the UV light on the ink on a contoured surface of the substrate.
Abstract:
A novel support for use with furniture having a spring-edge is provided that includes a coil assembly. The coil assembly is typically square or rectangular with top and bottom surfaces and a front edge that faces the front of the furniture piece. A bridge is secured to the top surface of the coil assembly to provide support for the spring-edge. The bridge extends outwardly away from the front edge of the coil assembly and is supported in the same plane as the top surface of the coil assembly by a series of wires. The wire supports terminate at and hold a stiffening member in place that forms the upper portion of the spring-edge. The stiffening member is used to attach a series of front springs to the bridge. These springs are held in place on their lower end by the frame of the piece of furniture.

Abstract:
A modular material supply system for an automated quilting machine having a variety of fill material supply devices, a cover material tick magazine, a fill laminator, and optionally a digital printer. The system is capable of selecting the desired cover and fill materials and supplying them continuously to a laminator to form a layered material, which is then fed to the quilting machine. The flexibility of the modular system reduces the need for system downtime to changeover component materials for producing different quilted products.

An apparatus for fully automated roll packing of compressible mattress spring assemblies, including a radially collapsible mandrel for easy removal of finished rolls. In-fed spring assemblies are precompressed prior to winding on the mandrel, which is mounted to a pivotable arm to permit controlled compression of the spring assemblies against a fixed compression roller. The apparatus further includes devices for placing the finished rolls on pallets and wrapping pallets for shipping and storage.
Abstract:
An apparatus for assembling coil springs together into a matrix of coil springs. The apparatus has workholders with respective grippers that receive and hold portions of end turns of respective coil springs, and a loader supporting the workholders for moving the workholders through a motion that transfers the respective coil springs from a conveyor to the apparatus. The coil assembling apparatus has, for each coil, a die set having a fixed die and a movable die. The movable die is connected to a drive via linkage. The drive is operable to move the movable die through a motion that maintains a planar die face of the movable die substantially parallel to a planar die face of the stationary die. The coil assembling apparatus is also operable to automatically assemble two rows of coil springs into a row of coaxial coil springs.
