Abstract: A head up display (HUD) system includes: a laser; a liquid crystal on silicon (LCoS) panel configured to modulate light output by the laser; a modulator control module configured to, during each predetermined period: apply power to the LCoS panel for a first predetermined ON period; and disconnect the LCoS panel from power for a remainder of the predetermined period; and a laser control module configured to, during each predetermined period: when a temperature of the LCoS panel is less than a predetermined temperature: apply power to the laser for a second predetermined ON period while power is applied to the LCoS panel and after the modulator control module begins applying power to the LCoS panel, where the second predetermined ON period is less than the first predetermined ON period; and disconnect the laser from power for the remainder of the predetermined period.

Abstract: A head-up display for a vehicle. The head-up display comprises a picture generating unit configured to project an image onto a glass surface and an optical stack. The optical stack comprises an infrared reflective waveplate and a dual brightness enhancement film. The infrared reflective waveplate transforms an incoming solar light beam from unpolarized light to incoming polarized light having an incoming S-polarization component and an incoming P-polarization component. The dual brightness enhancement film receives the incoming polarized light from the infrared reflective waveplate and eliminates substantially all of the incoming P-polarization component. The dual brightness enhancement film transmits substantially all of the incoming S-polarization component.

Abstract: A holographic projection system including first, second and third light sources, SLMs, a lens, a combiner and a control module. The first, second and third light sources generate respective light beams. The light beams have respective wavelengths. The SLMs respectively diffract the light beams. The lens is disposed to adjust a divergence angle of one of the light beams, such that diffracted light out of each of the SLMs is at a same diffraction angle. The SLMs encode phase holograms including respective versions of a graphic image based on light generated by the light sources including light output from the lens to provide phase hologram beams. The combiner combines the phase hologram beams to provide a combined phase hologram beam projected for viewing a combined graphic image. The control module encodes a prism hologram on one of the SLMs to align outputs of the SLMs.

Abstract: A HUD apparatus for a vehicle includes a HUD patch defined upon a reflective surface of a windshield of the vehicle. A virtual image generator projects a virtual image within the HUD patch. An image sensor is coaligned with the virtual image generator and has a field of view including the HUD patch. A controller is configured to receive, from the image sensor, a HUD patch image, and to adjust the projected virtual image based upon the HUD patch image.

Abstract: A head-up display (HUD) system for a vehicle comprises a windshield, a projector adapted to project an image onto an inner surface of the windshield, a HUD glare trap lens positioned between the projector and the windshield, the HUD glare trap lens adapted to allow the projected image to pass through the HUD glare trap lens to the inner surface of the windshield, and to reflect sunlight that passes through the windshield to the HUD glare trap lens, and a light trap adapted to deflect sunlight that passes through the windshield and is reflected by the HUD glare trap lens, to prevent the reflected sunlight from interfering with the HUD image projected onto the windshield.

Abstract: A system includes an infrared light source, an infrared camera, and a controller. The controller includes processing circuitry configured to control a pulse illumination of the infrared light source, capture a sequence of images from the infrared camera including infrared noise combined with a captured reflection of the pulse illumination, filter the infrared noise from the sequence of images based on a comparison of the captured reflection of the pulse illumination to an expected result of the pulse illumination, and track a feature of interest in the sequence of images after filtering of the infrared noise.

Abstract: A cloaking device includes a prism and a light guide. The prism is attachable to an article and is configured for directing around the article a light ray reflected from an object that is blocked from view. The prism has an object surface and an article surface spaced opposite the object surface. The guide is disposed on solely the object surface and has a refraction surface at least partially spaced apart from the object surface. The guide is configured for directing the ray through the prism such that the object is not blocked from view. The refraction surface and the ray define a first angle therebetween of less than 90°. The guide is formed from a first transparent material having a first refractive index and the prism is formed from a second transparent material having a second refractive index that is greater than or equal to the first refractive index.
