摘要:
An apparatus and method for soft recovery of a projectile is disclosed. Anlement, at least a portion of which is deformable, is placed in the path of the projectile, whereby the projectile becomes embedded in the element upon impact therewith. Gravitational or aerodynamic forces are applied to the combined projectile and deformable element to decelerate the same thereby making recovery possible.

A system is disclosed for decelerating a rifled projectile in flight. A gunore rifled with a land pattern having a characteristic number of turns per bore diameter, has a muzzle at a first angular orientation along the projectile's flight axis and a characteristic recoil distance. A deceleration tube having an opened end is located at a separation distance from the gun muzzle along the flight axis. The deceleration tube has a rifled land pattern with a second angular orientation at the opened end, displaced from the first angular orientation substantially by the product of the characteristic number of turns per bore diameter times the sum of the separation distance and the characteristic recoil distance. When the projectile is fired from the rifled gun, it has a rifle pattern engraved thereon and it travels along the flight axis undergoing rotational motion imparted by the rifle land pattern of the gun. The angular orientation of the deceleration tube causes the projectile to be brought into positive engagement with the rifled land pattern in the deceleration tube, so as to be decelerated without damaging the projectile. A pneumatic or hydraulic pressure can be efficiently brought to bear against the advancing projectile in the tube, by virtue of the accurate engagement of the projectile's engraved pattern with the rifle land pattern in the deceleration tube.
摘要:
A projectile recovery system where projectile speed is progressively reduced as the projectile passes through decelerator tubes. These tubes are precharged to high pressure in front of the projectile to minimize the decelerating distance. Quick opening valves, which separate the deceleration tubes and which seal them for pressurization, are opened as the projectile approaches so they will not be struck by the projectile with resulting damage.

A magnetic decelerator for projectiles and system of deceleration and recovery providing for economically recovering the projectiles undamaged. The projectile includes a magnetic permeable slug or the like of predetermined shape and size formed therein. A magnetic field is created between north and south pole pieces having electrically conductive facings thereon. As the projectile and slug therein pass between the pole pieces the movement of the slug through the magnetic flux lines induces ring currents in the conductive pole piece facings, which cause the deceleration and dissipation of energy of the projectile.

Freedom from exposed partition edges is attained by means of concealed cantilever supporting bracket arm structure on one or more vertical bars behind and in supporting relation to downwardly and rearwardly oblique deflector plates located forwardly from back plate means with which a downward bullet chute is provided to a spent bullet chamber defined behind upwardly and rearwardly sloping bottom plates. A bullet deenergizing device within the upper rear portion of the spent bullet chamber receives bullets deflected into a downward opening from which the spent bullets drop into the chamber. Great flexibility for multi-section installations is afforded, with unusually ample tolerance allowances for dimensional variations in the available space for the installation, and assured assembly stability.

Projectiles are recovered from free-flight for analysis of flight effects on the projectile. Recovery is accomplished by converting kinetic energy into controlled heat of compression which is dissipated in several stages. Shock compression is used during supersonic velocities of the projectile and adiabatic compression is used during sonic and subsonic velocities. Decelerator tubes having diaphragms within them are precharged to high pressure in front of the projectile to minimize the decelerating distance. The final diaphragm may or may not break depending upon the adiabatic pressure buildup.

A bullet decelerator and arrestor utilizes a stacked assembly of bullet arresting discs alternating with resilient discs. The disc assembly is enclosed by pliable material and contained within a grenade assembly or other body to be accelerated by the bullet.
