An image-forming apparatus includes an envelope, an electron source and an image-forming member arranged within the envelope, as well as an electron source drive circuit. An electroconductive member is arranged on the inner wall surface of the envelope between the electron source and the image-forming member. An electric current flow path A is formed as extending between the electroconductive member and the ground without passing through any of the electron source and the drive circuit. The electric current flow path A has a resistance lower than the resistance of another electric current flow path B extending between the electroconductive member and the ground by way of the electron source or the drive circuit.

A method for manufacturing a cathode comprises the steps of: a process for applying onto a substrate a fluid mixture comprising polymers or precursors to the polymers, fine particles of electroconductive material or organic metal compound, and solvent; a process for removing the solvent by heating the fluid mixture applied on the substrate, thereby obtaining an electroconductive organic film comprising the polymers and the electroconductive material; and a process for forming a gap at a portion of the electroconductive organic film by applying an electrical current thereto. Accordingly, a simple method for manufacturing cathodes, electron sources, and image forming apparatuses with excellent electron emitting properties can be realized.

Abstract:
An electron-beam generating device, in which a number of cold cathode elements are matrix-wired, as well as a method of driving the device, is applied to an image forming apparatus. Statistical calculations are performed in advance with regard to a required electron-beam output, and loss produced in the matrix wiring is analyzed. Drive signals are corrected by deciding optimum correction values based upon the analytical results. As a result, when rows of the matrix are driven successively row by row, the intensity of the outputted electron beams can made accurate for any driving pattern.
