    摘要: A relative position error signal is calibrated in an optical storage device in which a tracking error signal (TES) varies as the light beam shifts its position through the objective lens. The calibration is performed by moving the coarse carriage to a predetermined region of the optical disk and measuring the TES. The fine actuator is adjusted until the tracking error signal equals a predetermined value. Then, the relative position error signal is read and an adjustment to the RPE gain is calculated to bring the gain to a predetermined value. The adjusted gain is used during normal disk access operations.

    摘要: An automated data storage library accesses data stored on storage media contained in cartridges in response to commands from an external host. The cartridges may include cartridge memory and a component in the library may include a cartridge memory interface for reading data from and/or writing data to the cartridge memory. When a cartridge is to be stored in the library, the library modifies the contents of the cartridge memory, or the contents of the storage media such that the data stored on the cartridge becomes inaccessible, thereby preventing access to the data outside of the library. To perform an authorized access, the library restores the contents of the cartridge memory or the storage media. Alternatively, the library provides a correction or correction algorithm to the drive to allow access to the data stored on the storage media without removing the access protection of the storage media. The cartridge memory or storage media may also or alternatively include an identifier which permits access to the data only by the identified physical and/or logical library(s).

    摘要: The present invention locates spare sectors for replacing secondary defects found during disk use. A sorted defective sector list is maintained for tracking the spare sectors that have been previously used for replacements of other secondary defects. When a secondary defect address is found, a secondary defect list is updated both on the disk and in the drive's memory. A spare sector, for replacing the secondary defect is located by first calculating a group number to determine which group the secondary defect is located in. Next, the boundaries for a plurality of spare sectors allocated for that group is determined. After searching the replacement sector list, the first available spare sector of the plurality of spare sectors is identified as the replacement sector. If all of the plurality of spare sectors have been previously assigned as replacement sectors, a spare sector is instead located from a plurality of spare sectors allocated to a neighboring group. After locating the spare sector, its physical address is returned and the spare sector is logged in the defective sector list and in the replacement list.
