摘要: Transmission bandwidth consumption during the on-hold condition in telecommunications is reduced in a telecommunications system providing communication channels for the transmission of data between system stations. Two bandwidth states for each connecting channel are provided: an active state granting maximum bandwidth for the transmission of data and, for an on-hold condition, a minimal activity state for the connecting channel granting a minimal bandwidth. The active state prevails during the communication unless detecting means detect an on-hold condition in said connecting channel. Then, means responsive to a detection of on-hold condition switch to and provide a minimal activity state for said connecting channel granting a minimal bandwidth.

摘要: A mobile or desktop computer having a system bus that is exposed externally using a wireless transceiver so that input and output devices within proximity of the computer can be configured for immediate use. The wireless system bus of the invention provides discovery and acceptance of wireless peripheral devices within the range of the wireless transmissions. Serial or parallel communication can be supported on the same or different frequency channels. Preferably, the invention utilizes a dedicated discovery frequency for detecting the presence of peripherals in the proximity. Commands and data can be exchanged between the computer and the peripheral device in a secured manner.

摘要: For events scheduled within a user's calendar, a security mode is associated with the event. At the start of the scheduled event, the calendar notifies the security module of the security mode and the security mode is initiated. Different security modes may be defined, such as locking the system indefinitely, until the user unlocks the system with the password, locking the system for the duration of the event, or setting a shorter or longer inactivity period for a timer activated lock. Different event types may thus be matched with appropriate security modes, providing better overall security. The security mode, once initiated, may be maintained until the end of the schedule event, at which time the system may revert to a default security mode. Alternatively, the security mode may, by user specification or by default, be maintained until a different security mode is requested by the user, utilizing a password. The security system thus takes into consideration a user's behavior and scheduled activities in activating a system lock or other security mode.

摘要: A navigation device includes accelerometers for measuring movement. Given a beginning location and orientation, the device determines current location and orientation based on the information from the accelerometers. A user enters a list of items, such as a shopping list, into the device and the device determines a path to the items. The device then generates and presents directions for navigation. The path may be calculated to avoid hazards; such as shelves being stocked, congested checkout lines, and spilled items. The item list may be loaded into the device, using the bar code reader, optical character recognition, or through a store computer or the Internet. Planes of infrared beams are arranged within the environment such that a navigation device is likely to or must pass through a plane. A path may be computed to ensure that the navigation device passes through an IR plane. The navigation device has a plurality of IR sensors arranged in a tetrahedron. As the device passes through an IR plane, the device receives signals from the sensors. Given the order and timing of the signals and a location of the IR plane, the device performs a calibration. The device is calibrated without requiring the user to place the device in a cradle.

摘要: A system, method, and program of the invention enables a separating region to be displayed adjacent to at least one side of a problem menu choice within a menu list in a user interface. The problem menu choice may be any menu choice that has the potential for causing undesirable effects if it is inadvertently selected by a user, such as by overshooting a desired menu choice with a displayed pointer. The separating region creates a non-selectable area that buffers the problem menu choices from the other menu choices. The user is notified if the user moves the displayed pointer into the separating region. The notification may include any one or more of the following: i) changing the rate of movement of the displayed pointer, ii) causing the displayed pointer to change in appearance, and iii) causing an audible sound. The separating region may be partitioned into zones wherein certain characteristics of the notification is dependent upon the zone location of the displayed pointer. In addition, the displayed pointer may change in appearance or a tone may sound at various frequencies, pitches or volumes dependent upon the location of the displayed pointer in the separating region or within one of its zones. In a further embodiment, the displayed pointer decreases its rate of movement as it passes through a separating region towards a problem menu choice, and increases its rate of movement as it enters into a selectable area of the problem menu choice.

摘要: A method of obtaining, recording and using the denomination and the serial number of bills received into cash registers from purchasers, and using computer automation to dispense other bills from the cash registers to make change. Enhanced accounting, security and efficiency for cash transactions is provided by electronically associating bills with information describing the purchases and, optionally, transmitting electronically this information to the purchaser. Optical character recognition is used to identify the denomination and serial number of each bill. Optionally, a cashier may enter a duress code into the register to initiate a silent alarm signal, identify the serial numbers of each bill dispensed under duress, or mark an invisible ink onto each bill dispensed under duress. The method also enables determining whether each bill received is counterfeit or stolen.

摘要: A system and method are presented for sending a message from one telephone to another by transmission of a short code. A set of message units stored within the receiving telephone is assigned to a set of codes which may be transmitted. The receiving telephone is a code-compatible telephone configured to detect an incoming code and forward the corresponding message unit to an output device associated with the code-compatible telephone. A message unit may comprise an entire message, or a portion of a message, such that multiple message units are combined to form a message. The message units may be alphanumeric or non-alphanumeric. An alphanumeric message unit contains multiple alphanumeric characters, while a non-alphanumeric message unit may contain graphical or auditory information. An alphanumeric or graphic message unit is forwarded to a display screen on the code-compatible telephone if the corresponding code is received. An auditory message unit is instead forwarded to the telephone's loudspeaker. The codes may be transmitted using dual-tone-multi-frequency (DTMF) tones, digital signals, or other signals convertible to a form detectable by the code-compatible telephone. Transmission of codes to a code-compatible telephone may be used in one-way or two-way non-spoken communication by telephone, which may be useful for people with hearing and/or speech impairment, or for people in an environment in which spoken telephone communication is difficult or undesirable.
