Abstract:
An apparatus and method is discussed for characterizing a fluid sample downhole of aliphatic hydrocarbon compounds, aromatic hydrocarbon compound, or connate mud filtrates containing carbon-13 isotopes using an enhanced nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal on a measurement-while-drilling device. To enhance the carbon-13 NMR signal these nuclei are being hyperpolarized. Either the Overhauser Effect (OE) or the Nuclear Overhauser Effect or optical pumping and the Spin Polarization Induced Nuclear Overhauser Effect (SPINOE) can serve as a mechanism for hyperpolarization of the carbon-13 nuclei.
Abstract:
An apparatus and method for determining a parameter of interest of a formation composed of carbonate rock. A nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) sensor assembly produces a pulsed RF field designed for obtaining measurements indicative of the parameter of interest of the formation. A downhole processor processes the measurements for obtaining BVI and BVM using a cutoff time based on classification of the carbonate. Further processing is done to estimate the permeability of the carbonate.
Abstract:
A loop-gap resonator for providing an excitation pulse in a down hole nuclear magnetic resonating (NMR) tool for determining a parameter of interest in a formation adjacent a borehole. The loop-gap resonator is constructed having one or more capacitive gaps formed in a nonmagnetic conductive loop. The loop-gap resonator may be deployed down a bore in a measurement while drilling (MWD) configuration or in a wire line configuration. The MWD configuration may utilize a non-rotating sleeve rotationally associated with the drill string.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a novel use of a material having a high internal magnetostrictive damping and/ or using material with explicitly low magnetostriction as a NMR probe core material. The probe structural geometry facilitates the use of material, which has a relatively low magnetic permeability.
Abstract:
The present invention provides a drilling assembly for drilling deviated wellbores. The drilling assembly includes a drill bit at the lower end of the drilling assembly. A drilling motor provides the rotary power to the drill bit. A bearing assembly of the drilling motor provides lateral and axial support to the drill shaft connected to the drill bit. A steering device is integrated into drilling motor assembly. The steering device contains a plurality of force application members disposed at an outer surface of the drilling motor assembly Each force application member is adapted to move between a normal position and a radially extended position to exert force on the wellbore interior when in extended position. A power unit in the housing provides pressurized fluid to the force application members. A control device for independently operating each of the force application members is disposed in the drilling motor assembly. A control circuit or unit independently controls the operation of the control device to independently control each force application member. For short radius drilling, a knuckle joint is disposed uphole of the steering device to provide a bend in the drilling assembly. During drilling of a wellbore, the force application members are operated to adjust the force on the wellbore to drill the wellbore in the desired direction.
