Abstract: 534,337. Winding thread. KIMPTON, W. H. Aug. 2,1939, No. 22401. [Class 120 (ii)] An automatic pirn-winding machine having a starting and stopping handle and in which the pim tube being wound is held between a driven spindle and a counterhead and the thread is laid on the tube by a traversing device movable lengthwise of the tube until winding is complete, has mechanism comprising a cam shaft extending in the same general direction as the pirn tube and traversing device, a clutch for setting the shaft in motion on completion of winding, and number of cams disposed over the length of the shaft with appropriately disposed simple lever connection therefrom to enable the rotation of the shaft to effect the withdrawal of the counterhead, movement of the traversing device towards the tube-driving means, operation of a thread-trapping and cutting device, transfer of empty tube from a magazine to the winding position, release of the thread-trapping means, movement of the starting and stopping handle to starting position and release of the clutch. As shown, the clutch comprises a disc 26 fast on the cam shaft 17 and a disc 24 loose thereon and driven continuously by worm gearing, disc 24 driving the disc 26 and shaft 17 when a lug 29 on a lever 27 pivoted on the disc 26 is forced by a spring-pressed pivoted lever 30 on the disc 26 into engagement with one of a series of notches 25 in the periphery of the disc 24 ; during winding the lever 30 is held out of engagement with the lever 27 by a lever 34 on a shaft 35 carrying a spring- pressed lever 36 and when winding is completed, the tripping of mechanism in the gear box 1 driving the spindle head 6 and traverse rod 9 causes the starting and stopping lever 16 to swing and, through rod 45 and pivoted lever 43 to cause the end 39 of a lever 40 engaging a cam 37 on the shaft 17 to move from the lever 36 and allow its spring to move it and the lever 34 to allow the spring-pressed lever 30 to clutch the disc 24 to the disc 26 and so drive the shaft 17. A cam 46 on the shaft then rocks a pivoted lever 47 so that a pair of arms 49 engage pins 50 extending from the counterhead 4 and move it against the action of a spring 54 to release the completed pirn which drops down a shoot 56 carrying the thread extending from the traversing thread guide 15 with it ; another cam 57 now actuates a lever 58 in a spindle 59 carrying a cranked lever 60 which engages a lever 62 pivoted on the feeler wheel 12 and moves the wheel out of engagement with the threads on the traverse rod 9. Further movement of the lever 60 moves the feeler wheel 12 back to its initial position and the lower end of the lever engages a pivoted lever 66 so that the upper end of this lever engages the thread between the thread guide 15 and the dropped pirn and carries it against the rubber face 8 of the driving spindle 6. A fourth cam 69 then actuates a forked lever 70, 71 engaging an arm 74 on the shaft 76 of an arm 75 having a sickle-shaped end which engages the thread positioned over the driving-face 8 and carries it between a pair of members 79, 80 the upper member 79 being of spring steel and rounded and the lever member 80 being sharpened so that the thread is clamped between the members and cut by the cooperating edges of the member 80 and the arm 75. A further cam 83 on the shaft 17 then actuates a lever 89 which causes a pair of transferring arms 86 to move with the lowermost empty tube in the magazine 84, disposed in forks 92 in the arms, up to the winding position in line with the spindle 6 and counterhead 4, the lever arms 49 being then withdrawn by the cam 46 to allow the spring 54 to press the head 4 against the end of the empty tube and press it against the rubber face 8 of the spindle 6 and against the thread there positioned ; the cam 69 then releases the arm 75 and the arms 86 are returned to their initial position. The lever 40 is raised by the cam 37 and moves the rod 45 so that the starting lever 16 causes the clutches in the gear box 1 to drive the spindle and traverse rod and winding is restarted ; the starting lever 16 is held in the running position by a pivoted catch 94 engaging an arm 95 on the lever and when the pirn is fully wound a trip lever 97 on the catch 94 is rocked so as to bring a projection 99 into the path of a member 100 moving with the traverse rod 9, the return stroke of the rod pushing the lever 97 towards the gear box 1 and rocking the catch 94 to free the lever 95 and allow the starting and stopping handle 16 to move to stop the machine. As the shaft 17 approaches the end of a single revolution the locking lever encounters the end of the lever 34 and is withdrawn from engagement with lever 27 which is then free to move out of the notch in the disc 24 and cause the driving connection to be broken and the shaft 17 to stop. A pin 102 carried by a knob 103 can be pushed under the lever 36 when it is desired to put the automatic mechanism out of action. Specification 475,157 is referred to in the Provisional Specification.
