Abstract:
Improved tobacco smoke filters, particularly cigarette filters, are prepared from a web of synthetic polymeric fibers having applied to at least one surface thereof a film-forming derivative of cellulose. Continuous processes and apparatus for the production of the web and filter are also described.
Abstract:
A hydrophobic microporous film comprising a hydrophilic microporous film and a surfactant coating of a silicon glycol copolymer which renders the coated microporous film hydrophilic. The hydrophilic microporous film of the instant invention more rapidly ''''wets'''' than microporous films of the prior art. A second surfactant, preferably an imidazoline tertiary amine, may also be included in the surfactant coating. The hydrophilic microporous film has particular application as a battery separator which must be rapidly ''''wetted'''' to generate its electrical output.
Abstract:
An electrical conductor having a dielectric insulation material formed from a partially heat-shrunk open-celled microporous film is disclosed. The dielectric insulation material is impregnated with a dielectric liquid selected from halogenated organic compounds having from 1 to 5 halogen substituents and from 1 to 3 aryl groups; perfluorobutylamines and ethers; perfluorohydrocarbons; silicone oils; mineral oils; castor oil and cottonseed oil.
Abstract:
Shaped articles of cellulose esters, such as cellulose acetate or cellulose triacetate, and a process for dyeing these articles are provided. Sodium tungstophosphate or sodium tungstosilicate is added to a cellulose ester spinning dope in a minor quantity sufficient to promote the dyeability of the article eventually formed from the dope. The resulting additive-containing spinning dope is formed into a shaped article (e.g., staple fiber, filament, film, etc.) and subsequently contacted with an aqueous dyebath containing a cationic dye.
Abstract:
Method and apparatus for doffing filled yarn packages from a metier and donning empty package is disclosed. The apparatus includes an upper frame and a lower frame which are mounted together on a track extending along the length of the metier. Each frame includes an arm operable to swing the package away from the cam and an arm for engaging the yarn, severing the yarn and throwing on the yarn ends after the filled package has been replaced with an empty package. The apparatus includes controls for coordinating the movements of the various components.
Abstract:
A biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film having balanced shrinkage of at least 40 percent in both longitudinal and transverse directions and the process for forming the film. The biaxially oriented polyethylene terephthalate film is formed in a process where a cast sheet of polyethylene terephthalate is stretched in a first and a second direction, the second direction being perpendicular to the first direction. The ratio of the degree of stretching in the first and second directions is in the range of between about 0.8 and 1.2. The biaxially stretched film is thereafter heat set at a temperature in the range of between about 40*and 80*C.
Abstract:
An improved process is provided for the expeditious formation of large denier carbon fibers, i.e. carbon fibers having a single filament denier of at least 30. A fibrous polybenzimidazole starting material of relatively large denier is initially converted to a polybenzimidazonium salt by contact with a solution of certain acids at an elevated temperature, and the resulting fibrous material sequentially is heated in oxygencontaining and non-oxidizing gaseous atmospheres at successively elevated temperatures. The resulting carbonaceous fibrous material contains at least 90 percent carbon by weight and particularly is suited for use as a reinforcing medium in a matrix material, e.g. either a polymeric or metallic matrix material.
Abstract:
Process for the cycloammonolysis of disubstituted alkanes which have primary amino and/or hydroxyl substituents to produce heterocyclic imines using a metal aluminosilicate molecular sieve catalyst.
Abstract:
Crotonylidenediurea is reacted with glyoxal and the resulting adduct methylolated with formaldehyde to produce the corresponding trimethylolated derivative which exhibits very desirable properties as a permanent press resin for fabrics.
Abstract:
A stabilized polyalkylene terephthalate resin composition is disclosed. The polyalkylene terephthalate resin composition comprises a polyalkylene terephthalate resin selected from the group consisting of polypropylene terephthalate and polybutylene terephthalate, 2 to 60 percent of the total composition of a reinforcing filler and up to below 1 percent by weight of the total composition of a polyamide, preferably polycaprolactam. The composition retains a higher degree of tensile strength after high temperature long-term aging than does any polyalkylene terephthalate composition of the prior art.
