Embodiments are described for a method of rendering audio for playback through headphones comprising receiving digital audio content, receiving binaural rendering metadata generated by an authoring tool processing the received digital audio content, receiving playback metadata generated by a playback device, and combining the binaural rendering metadata and playback metadata to optimize playback of the digital audio content through the headphones.

A system and method of modifying a binaural signal using headtracking information. The system calculates a delay, a first filter response, and a second filter response, and applies these to the left and right components of the binaural signal according to the headtracking information. The system may also apply headtracking to parametric binaural signals. In this manner, headtracking may be applied to pre-rendered binaural audio.

There is provided a method for processing multimedia data, the method includes automatically determining user perception on a segment of the multimedia data based on a plurality of clusters, the plurality of clusters obtained in association with predefined user perceptions and processing the segment of the multimedia data at least in part based on determined user perception on the segment. In some embodiments, virtualization methods for generating a binaural signal in response to channels of a multi-channel audio signal, which apply a binaural room impulse response (BRIR) to each channel including by using at least one feedback delay network (FDN) to apply a common late reverberation to a downmix of the channels. In some embodiments, input signal channels are processed in a first processing path to apply to each channel a direct response and early reflection portion of a single-channel BRIR for the channel, and the downmix of the channels is processed in a second processing path including at least one FDN which applies the common late reverberation. Typically, the common late reverberation emulates collective macro attributes of late reverberation portions of at least some of the single-channel BRIRs. Other aspects are headphone virtualizers configured to perform any embodiment of the method.

An audio playback system generates output signals for multiple channels of acoustic transducers by applying a rendering matrix to data representing the aural content and spatial characteristics of audio objects, so that the resulting sound field creates accurate listener impressions of the spatial characteristics. Matrix coefficients are updated to render moving objects. Discontinuous updates of the rendering matrix coefficients are controlled according to psychoacoustic principles to reduce audible artifacts. The updates may also be managed to control the amount of data needed to perform the updates.
