An image quality analysis system is provided that allows highly accurate measurements of motion quality defects. The motion quality analysis process relies only on relative measurements, which can be performed sufficiently accurately with standard input scanners. The technique can therefore be incorporated in the image path of a copier or multi-function printer being tested to allow on-the-fly motion quality correction without the need for expensive, high precision measuring equipment. The system includes one or more digital test patterns provided in hardcopy form for providing one or more hardcopy test images, an input scanner that can scan the hard copy test image to form a digital raster image, and an image quality analysis module that receives information about the position of the digital raster image and produces test results relevant to determination of image quality analysis, particularly motion quality defects. The method is accurate and robust using relatively low-resolution CCD-based flat bed scanners, even in spite of their long-range positional errors.

This invention relates to a method and apparatus for implementing a trapping operation on a digital image during image processing. Some embodiments of the present invention provide an intelligent trapping process to compensate for registration errors or halo effect errors by an imaging device. At various times, a set of customized trapping parameters may be determined for the device based on its actual or estimated performance. The imaging device may be checked automatically on a periodic basis, in response to an event, or upon request. The trapping parameters may be unidirectional and may vary temporally or spatially. The imaging device can then print images based on its customized set of trapping parameters.

The specific problem with image quality addressed with this metric is that of a region of a printed (or copied) image, which was intended to have a uniform color, but which shows visible color variations. The color variation can have many different forms, both with respect to the type of color difference and with respect to the spatial nature of the non-uniformities. The image quality analysis system readily distinguishes between non-uniformities in the following different categories, including: (a) amplitude modulated cluster dot halftone patterns; (b) frequency modulated halftone patterns (e.g., stochastic screens); (c) irregular two-dimensional variations from noise; (d) isolated (non-periodic) one-dimensional streaks; (e) periodic, one-dimensional bands; and (f) two-dimensional periodic variations (Moire). The results from the image quality analysis can then be used as a basis for diagnosing machine problems.

Using a system of computer modules operatively associated with a document processing machine, banding defect analysis is accomplished by analyzing specific test patterns via image processing. The banding defects are characterized in terms of quantitative parameters based on an analysis of the banding defect. Key features are extracted from the banding defect parameters. The key features are analyzed in a diagnostic engine, to determine the possible source of the defect. The identified source is correlated to a recommended repair service procedure. The diagnostic process may be augmented by also including machine data in the analysis.
