    Abstract: A process is provided for conducting an eye examination using a mobile device, the process comprising capturing a first image of an object using a camera of a mobile device set to a fixed focusing distance; determining, with reference to the first image, an absolute size of the object; capturing a second image of the object using the camera of the mobile device; determining, with reference to the second image, a distance from the mobile device to the object; providing an indication via the mobile device to move the mobile device relative to the object; and receiving input from the mobile device in response to the eye examination program.

    Abstract: A server in communication with a first device capable of receiving input from a camera attached to the first device, and a second device capable of displaying output, is provided. The server is configured to receive, from the first device, data relating to characteristics of the camera and characteristics of an image obtained by the camera of a screen of the second device; determine a screen pixel length of the screen; and provide instructions to the second device to display on the screen an object at a desired visual angle in response to the data received from the second device and the screen pixel length, while the first device is positioned at an arbitrary distance from the screen.

The camera may capture a first image of a pattern through a lens that is separate from the camera, while the lens is in contact with a pattern. The second image may be transformed to an ideal coordinate system, and processed determine a distortion of the pattern attributable to the lens. The mobile device may measure characteristics of the lens based on the distortion. Characteristics of the lens may include a spherical power, a cylinder power, and/or an astigmatism angle.

    Abstract: A process is provided for determining characteristics of a lens, the process including obtaining a captured image of a pattern through a corrective lens; transforming the captured image to an ideal coordinate system; processing the captured image to determine an overall distortion from a reference pattern to the pattern of the captured image; determining a distortion of the captured pattern attributable to the corrective lens; and measuring at least one characteristic of the corrective lens. In some embodiments, the overall distortion is determined by detecting, in the captured image, at least one captured pattern landmark; determining a transformation from at least one ideal pattern landmark to the at least one captured pattern landmark; and determining for the corrective lens, from the transformation, a spherical power measurement, a cylinder power measurement, and an astigmatism angle measurement.
