An improvement in a power drive is disclosed that allows four quadrant operation with reduced harmonics. The power drive has a multiphase, non phase shifted transformer with a single common input connected inductive reactance. Multiple series connected power cells are utilized, each configured for four quadrant operation and having a multiphase input and a single phase output, each controllable to reduce harmonics in both the input source line and the output line. Each power cell includes a three phase input converter, a smoothing filter, and a single phase output converter. A method for operating the power drive includes the steps of selectively controlling switching events at the input and output of each power cell such that switching events in respective power cells are spaced apart in time thereby reducing harmonic components. The method can be implemented using pulse width modulation control based upon interdigitated carrier signals which control the input and output of each power cell.

An apparatus and method for reducing distortion currents present in an alternating current power system supplying power to a load which includes a passive filter and an active filter. In a first embodiment, the passive filter is operably connected to the power system across the load by a switching device. An active filter is then connected across the switching device and operated to draw a current equal to the current through the passive filter. The active filter and the passive filter are thereby connected in series across the load. The active filter is controlled to draw a fundamental frequency component and to provide distortion currents required by the load. In a second embodiment, the active filter is connected in parallel with a first circuit, the parallel combination of which is connected in series with a second circuit across the load. Besides providing distortion currents required by the load, the active filter is controlled to draw a current substantially in phase with the voltage across it in order to provide damping.

Apparatus and methods in accordance with this invention provide a multi-cell power supply for receiving power from a source and delivering power at an output terminal to a load. The multi-cell power supply includes a first power cell coupled to the source, and a first current sensor circuit. The first power cell provides a first output current, and includes a first output terminal coupled to a reference node of the multi-cell power supply, and a second output terminal coupled to the output terminal. The first current sensor circuit includes a first current sensor and a power supply. The first current sensor is coupled to the first output terminal of the first power cell, and measures the first output current. The method comprises detecting a failed cell in one of the drives, inhibiting operation of the drive with the failed cell, determining a peak output voltage capability of the drive with the failed cell, communicating the peak output voltage capability to a master controller, and limiting a maximum voltage that each drive can apply to a motor. The method also comprises bypassing the failed cell and resuming operation of the drive with the failed cell after the motor voltage falls below the peak output voltage capability of the drive with the failed cell.

The method includes receiving an indication of an acceptable level of total harmonic distortion (THD) for the transformer, identifying a desired number of secondary windings per output phase of the transformer, simulating performance of various models for the transformer various potential phase shift angles, wherein each of the various models includes a set of phase shift angles for the secondary windings of the transformer. The method further includes identifying, based on the simulation, a transformer model that both has no more than three unique phase shift angles in the set and exhibits a primary side THD that is within the acceptable level, identifying an optimized core cross-sections, and reporting the identified transformer model having the three unique phase shift angle and the optimized core cross-sections.
