摘要： A mode locked semiconductor laser that can generate relatively high-power output pulses. The semiconductor mode locked laser is formed from an array of optical amplifiers that are coupled to a common resonant cavity by way of an optical channelizer or wavelength division multiplexer (WDM). By utilizing an array of optical amplifiers, the output pulses will have a relatively higher power than known mode locked lasers. As such, the mode locked semiconductor laser in accordance with the present invention does not depend on the power handling capability of the individual optical amplifiers and allows the average output power to be scaled, for example, up to the kilowatt range using semiconductor optical amplifiers. A mode locked laser in accordance with the present invention can be implemented with active mode locking, passive mode locking or a hybrid of the two. In embodiments utilizing active mode locking, the output pulse shape can be tailored by the amplifier drive current distribution.

摘要： An integrated optical waveguide structure which provides for efficient, single-mode propagation of light across an interface between two contiguous waveguide layers of differing effective refractive index. The waveguides are formed by layers of increased index of refraction formed at the surface of a substrate and serve to support propagation of optical electromagnetic radiation along the surface of the substrate. A refractive interface is provided at the interface of two such surface layers supporting modes of differing effective indexes of refraction. By underlying one of the surface layers with an additional layer having a particular, but different, index of refraction, a single mode of propagation is supported throughout both of the surface waveguides. General applications in the formation of optical waveguide components as well as a more extensive treatment with the formation of a lens is also disclosed using proton exchange in crystalline LiNbO.sub.3.

摘要： A photonic arbitrary waveform modem utilizes a bipolar coding scheme. The bipolar coding scheme includes an arbitrary waveform modem which includes a plurality of tapped delay lines and is implemented by partitioning each optical frequency chip into positive and negative segments. Signals are decoded by effectively multiplying the transmit and receive code vectors and individually summing the positive and negative tap weights. The positive and negative tap weights are differenced to recreate the transmitted signal. The bipolar coding scheme allows for the use of truly orthogonal codes which decreases the interference and reduces the probability of detection.

摘要： A fluid control assembly including a fluid control device having a main body, annular shoulders extending from opposite sides of the main body, and a tubular, relatively compressible liner extending out of opposite sides of the body through and axially beyond the shoulders, and at least one relatively non-compressible flange spacer positioned on each shoulder. The flange spacers extend from the main body of the fluid control device to between ends of the shoulders and ends of the liner, when the liner is in a non-compressed state. According to one embodiment, the fluid control assembly further includes bolts for securing the fluid control assembly to a pipe flange, and a liveload assembly positioned on each bolt. Each liveload assembly includes an upper washer, a lower washer, at least one spring positioned to resist compression between the upper and the lower washers, and a ribbon secured at a first end to one of the upper and the lower washers, with a second end of the ribbon extending towards the other of the upper and the lower washers. The ribbon has a total length including a comparison portion substantially equal to a proper compressed height of the at least one spring, with only the comparison portion of the total length positioned between the upper and the lower washers for comparison with the height of the spring.

摘要： A prefabricated modular portable livestock shelter shipped unassembled includes a pair of end walls 22 and 24 attached to a side wall 26. In addition a roof 28 is attached to the end walls 22 and 24, and the side wall 26. The end walls 22 and 24 are connected by a front tubular side rail 30, a back tubular side rail 32, and a pair of tubular skids 34 by means of a tubular connector 36 and tubular connector fastener 38. Upturned ends 40 allow the shelter to slide easily over the surface of the ground. The shelter is secured by placing metal earth anchors 42 into the ground and fastening them to the shelter with a steel cable and clamp 44. The shelter can be configured in the winter to provide protection from wind while allowing exposure to sun. The summer configuration provides additional shade while allowing breeze to pass through the structure. A tractor or other suitable farm vehicle may fasten a chain to the metallic hooks 46 in order to drag the portable livestock shelter 20 over the ground to facilitate pasture, manure, and disease management. The structure can be disassembled to move from one location to another.

摘要： Spring-powered device for swatting flies and other insects has a swatting element pivotably connected to an elongated handle through two axially-aligned helical springs interposing the swatting element and handle. The springs, provided with protruding ends for connection purposes, perform the triple function of connecting the handle to the swatting element, powering the swat, and providing a pivot or hinge on which the swatting element pivots. The springs are oppositely-wound, one on a left-hand and one on a right-hand helix, thereby providing lateral balance to the swat. A sliding rod affixed to the handle performs the functions of restraining the swatting element against the action of the springs prior to the swat and of subsequently releasing it into its swatting arc under spring power. The springs' location immediately between the handle and the swatting element, combined with their pivot and powering functions, allows the swatting element of the device to pivot in a substantially full-circle arc under continuous torque force of the springs for the entire arc, thereby permitting it to make sharp contact with a swatting surface at any point in the arc.

摘要： A needle assembly for the sterile and physical protection of a needle cannula and a method for making the needle cannula is described. A removable sealing tube is integrally attached to one end of a holder which fixedly retains the needle cannula. A removable needle protector is integrally attached to the other end of the holder. The sealing tube, holder and protector define a unitary piece which encases the needle cannula. To make the needle assembly, an insert assembly including an annular die, the needle cannula and an outer cannula is positioned in a forming cavity. The forming cavity is then filled with molten plastic which upon cooling forms the unitary piece. The forward and rearward ends of the unitary piece are then sealed.

The unit is compact as it uses the metal strings of the guitar as a partial antenna. The unit remains stationary after being plugged into the guitar's input receptacle, and no transmitting portion of the device has to be attached to the musician's belt or guitar strap, or to the musician's person in any fashion. Furthermore, no large unsightly, cumbersome antenna extends from the device intself. The device is automatically turned on when plugged in.
