A method and apparatus for displaying a gray scale of a plasma display panel, by which generation of a pseudo contour upon expression of a gray scale with respect to a moving picture is prevented when a picture is displayed on a plasma display panel. The method can prevent generation of pseudo contours of dark lines (or bright lines) so that a temporal inconsistency appears as spatial inconsistency, at a portion of a moving picture in which gray scale changes are subtle, when expressing a gray scale by temporal duplication of light emission using the after-image effect of vision. In view of the fact that a pseudo contour is generated because the movement of a pixel is not consistent with the movement of the human eye, and thus a temporal change in luminance is shown as dispersion of luminance on retinas, the present invention redistributes of sub-fields having the luminance of one cell to several cells, as many sub-fields corresponding to the inconsistency of the detected movement of a pixel with the movement of the eye. Accordingly, the movement of a pixel can be approximately consistent with the movement of the eye. Consequently, the retina of the eye can perceive the temporal stimulation of an original picture, so that pseudo contour phenomenon is reduced regardless of the moving speed of a picture.

There is provided a method for driving a discharge device, especially a plasma display panel to improve a discharge process. The discharge device driving method prevents the increase of a discharge voltage and the decrease of an operating margin since space charge is efficiently controlled to lower the discharge voltage by adding a non-discharge signal for controlling space charge to a driving signal applied to at least one of two discharge electrodes, or to a third electrode, during a discharge sustaining period of the driving signals applied to both the discharge electrodes. In particular, the effects of the present invention is markedly excellent in the case of a pulse width of 1 &mgr;s or below. Discharge can be stably sustained by using a space-charge controlling non-discharge pulse of 200 ns˜1 &mgr;s wide, according to the panel structure, physical characteristics, and the driving method. In addition, in a method for applying the space-charge controlling non-discharge pulse according to the present invention, discharge efficiency can be increased by enabling the space-charge controlling non-discharge pulse to efficiently use space charge in a discharge space during a discharge sustaining period.

An AC surface discharge plasma display panel and a method for driving the same are provided. In the method for driving the AC surface discharge plasma display panel according to the present invention, a parallel driving method is used, which is known to have better brightness characteristics than a separate driving method in which the addressing is separate from the discharge sustaining, in which the addressing and discharge sustaining are simultaneously performed. Periods between the discharge sustaining pulses applied to the scanning electrodes and the common electrodes are set as the address time slots periods, a plurality of data pulses are applied in the address time slot periods, and a number of common electrodes equal to the number of data pulses are wired as one common electrode group and are driven by the same signal, in order to solve the restrictions on the number of the horizontal scanning lines which can be scanned, which is a defect of conventional parallel drive methods.
