A adaptor for mounting a wheel alignment instrument on a wheel has a frame provided with a slideway and a slide assembly on the slideway of the frame. Both the frame and the slide assembly have gripping elements that are capable of bearing against and gripping axially directed surfaces on the wheel rim. Once the adaptor is positioned on the wheel rim with its gripping elements located along an axially directed surface, one of two actuating elements on the slide assembly is turned. The one actuating element causes the slide assembly to grip the slideway and then move outwardly so that the gripping elements firmly grip an inwardly presented surface, such as the inside face of a rim flange. The other actuating element causes the slide assembly to grip the slideway and then move inwardly so that the gripping elements firmly grip an outwardly presented surface, such as the outside face of a rim flange.

A wheel mirror calibrating device for checking and aligning mirrors used on motor vehicle wheel alignment equipment. The device comprises a portable unit comprising support and level members to align a rotatable horizontal shaft which supports a truncated triangular mirror support frame. The mirror support frame supports the wheel alignment mirror in the same manner as the rim of the wheel which would be aligned with the equipment. The frame has calibrated adjustment push screws for alignment of the mirror support pads to the zero position. An image is projected onto the mirror and reflected to a projection screen such that as the mirror is rotated the image must remain in the same position or the mirror needs alignment. Each mirror is individually adjustable by three screws on the back thereof for alignment of the mirror.

To test the alignment of the front wheels of an automotive vehicle, the front wheels of the vehicle are driven onto a pair of spaced, parallel rollers, one of which is driven to effect rotation of the front wheels while the vehicle is standing motionless. The hubcaps are removed and a plane mirror is secured by a magnet to the hub of each front wheel. A laser beam is shone onto each mirror through a central hole in a chart. Means is provided for adjusting the the mirror angularly to tilt its plane relative to the axis of the associated spindle of the vehicle. Each mirror can be adjusted so that its plane is perfectly perpendicular to the axis of the spindle. Then the wheels can be accurately tested for toe, run-out and camber.

In measuring the toe of the front wheels of a vehicle, a projector is mounted on each wheel and aimed at a background unit in front of the vehicle. Two adjustable scales on the background unit are set so that a reference image projected from each projector hits the zero line of the scale for that wheel when the wheel is normal to the background unit. To determine the toe, the wheels are turned until one of the wheels is normal to the panel. The reference image is projected from the projector on the other wheel to a mirror on the background unit, and is reflected back to a mirror on the projector, from which it is reflected back to the adjustable scale for that wheel on the background unit. The reading on the scale, which is enlarged, gives the total toe of the vehicle wheels.

A system and process for aligning wheels of a three-wheel cycle include mounting targets to two wheels on an axle of the three-wheel cycle and positioning an alignment device relative to a single wheel of the three-wheel cycle to create a virtual axle and assess thrust angle. Once targets are in place, thrust angle is reduced to zero, and camber, caster, and toe measurements are taken and adjusted as needed to achieve three-wheel alignment.

An automobile body 2 with a wheel mount 5 vertically movably mounted thereon is supported, and the wheel mount 5 is lifted to an adjusting position which is set so as to be lower than the position that the wheel mount 5 takes when the automobile is running. The position of the wheel mount 5 as it is lifted and toe and camber angles thereof are measured, and estimated values of the toe and camber angles at the position that the wheel mount 5 takes when the automobile is running are calculated based on the measured values. Thereafter, adjustment quantities for the toe and camber angles at the adjusting position are calculated, and wheel alignment is adjusted at the adjusting position based on the adjustment quantities. Wheel alignment of the automobile can be measured and adjusted quickly and accurately for increased productivity without applying the same load to the automobile body as the load that is applied when the automobile is running.

The present invention relates to a wheel alignment measuring apparatus which measures the toe-in length or angle and camber angle of each tire (17) of a car.The wheel alignment measuring apparatus can be used to measure the distances to various points on the surface of the tire (17) by means of the light of a predetermined wavelength emitted from the light-emitting means (4) and to determine the toe-in angle or length and camber angle of the tire (17) based on the measured distances. In other words, such measurement can be done without any contact with the tire (17) under inspection, thus it is possible to prevent any trouble which would occur when such measurement is done in contact with the tire, such as error caused by the oscillation or the like of the tire (17).Also, with the wheel alignment measuring apparatus according to the present invention, it is possible to effectively correct any error of measurement caused by any irregularities on the tire (17), thereby attaining a higher accuracy of measurement since the calculating means (6) incorporated appropriately calculates the distances to various points on the tire surface from the data obtained based on the time taken for the light emitted toward various points on the entire circumference of each tire (17) at many short time intervals to return, as reflected, to the light-emitting means (photo-detecting means).

A wheel alignment system includes either four wheel mountable alignment heads or two alignment heads and two retroreflectors or two alignment heads alone together with a control console and display. A main process unit is included in the console for performing calculations and for controlling systems function control components communications sequences. Each console function control component includes its own controller. The control console further includes a CRT display module and optional voice instruction and printer output modules. A bar code reader is available for quick specifications entry. Communications and decision making instructions are downloaded from the controller in each console function control component to the main processing unit at initialization. Communication between the heads and the console is accomplished either through the use of conducting cords or infrared transmission and reception. Each alignment head also includes a controller which controls collection of alignment data in parallel at each head as well as serial transmission from each head to the console during discrete transmission periods as required by the main processing unit.

Apparatus for aligning vehicle front and rear wheels and a method of applying such apparatus in which projectors of light beams on the front wheels direct beams forwardly to a cooperating alignment stand and direct beams rearwardly to cooperate with devices on the rear wheels which include scales and reflective surfaces used in aligning the front wheels and determining the positions of the rear wheels relative to the vehicle longitudinal axis or geometric center line. The projectors on the front wheels support screens in positions to cooperate with the light beams when reflected back from the stand and from the rear wheels.
