The system includes a fuel quantity and a distance traveled transducer each of which feeds electrical signals to a computer. The computer calculates a value of distance traveled per quantity of fuel used and records the calculated value a number of times n, adds the total number of values recorded and divides by n. The number 5 is chosen as an ideal value for n. The quotient is then visually displayed. The computer continues to calculate new values of distance traveled per quantity of fuel used. After each new calculation (when 5 is used for n) 4 displayed values are added to the new calculated value, the sum is divided by 5 and the quotient is visually displayed. This may also be done by storing all the inputs n in a single register with the new value added to the register and the most recently displayed value subtracted from the register and then divide the total value in the register by n to acquire a new value for display. Various other modifications and methods are disclosed.

The invention includes temperature controlled fuel systems which may or may not have measuring devices therein. Systems of the invention may be used with engines which return unburned fuel, and treatment apparatus may be included in such systems for cooling the fuel, removing bubbles or the like. In one system having the treating apparatus, a fuel line conducts fuel from the fuel supply to the engine in bypassing relation to the treatment apparatus. One concept uses a single measuring device and another concept includes two measuring devices which give a differential output of fuel measurement. Indicating or recording devices or both are responsive to single or dual measuring devices to indicate fuel flow. Also, in the fuel system which is used with engines that return unburned fuel and which uses a single measuring device, such measuring device is connected prior to the combining of the return fuel and the fuel supply for the engine. Compensating structure to correct the indications of the indicator or recorder due to variations in the physical characteristics of the fuel may also be employed in the system.
