    摘要: The present invention relates in general to a pressure discharge mechanism for closed vessels having an internal chamber designed to hold volatile and/or explosive substances in a sealed manner comprised of an at least one eutectic composition and a threaded joint designed to open or vent the closed vessel when the contents of the closed vessel reaches a predetermined temperature while maintaining full structural integrity during normal operation. In one aspect, the closed vessel is a munitions casing which functions as intended under normal operating environments, but then when exposed to extreme temperatures, reduces the munition's high order explosion capability, and is transformed into a safe, low order reaction with significantly less reactive potential. In one aspect, the closed vessel is a transport tanker which should not release substances contained therein. However, if the tanker catches fire, the pressure relief mechanism of the present invention reduces risk of explosion.

In order that fragments are retained in the packing in the event of an unintentional ignition of the hollow charges, the packing withstands the pressure which is generated and permits a dissipation of pressure, it is proposed according to the invention that a) the hollow charges are embedded in a solid material which captures the fragments generated during a detonation of the hollow charges, b) the solid material has pressure relief openings through which the pressure wave of the gas volume generated during a detonation of the hollow charges can escape, c) the solid material is covered with shock-absorbing material on the top side and on the base side of the packing, d) the hollow charges are packed in pairs such that there are always two hollow charges situated opposite the openings, e) the axes of symmetry of the hollow charges are arranged in a plane perpendicular to the top side and base side, and f) the solid material is inserted with the hollow charges and the shock-absorbing material into a cage, preferably a bar-grate-type cage.

    摘要: A cartridge munition, particularly practice round, includes a cartridge shell (3) and a projectile (2) inserted into it. A propulsion chamber (4) is provided within the cartridge shell that receives a propulsive charge (5) that may be ignited by means of a pyrotechnic igniter (13) and that develops propulsive gases that act on the base (8) of the projectile, driving it out of the cartridge shell. In order to prevent the pyrotechnic igniter from igniting spontaneously, and from igniting the propulsive charge (5) because of the ambient temperature or because of a fire, which would cause the cartridge shell and projectile to be separated and fly apart, it is proposed by the invention to provide exhaust channels (14) between the propulsion chamber and the exterior of the cartridge shell (3) that are filled with a fusible material, particularly a fusible metal (15). The fusible material has a lower melting point than the ignition point of the igniter (13) and of the propulsive charge (5). If the ambient temperature of the cartridge shell rises above the melting point of the fusible material, it melts, releasing the exhaust channels (14), so that, upon delayed ignition of the propulsive charge, it burns without pressure buildup, and the cartridge shell and projectile remain together.

    摘要: Method and apparatus for minimizing blast damage caused by an explosive device carried in luggage or other cargo loaded on an aircraft. A first cargo container is provided which includes a non-explosion-resistant panel. A second cargo container, also including a non-explosion-resistant panel is paired with the first container and both containers are loaded in the cargo bay such that the non-explosion-resistant panels face inboard, oppose and align with one another. The method provides a controlled venting feature whereby explosive products are vented into the adjacent container in the cargo bay of an aircraft through non-explosion-resistant panel on the inboard side of the container. The container is constructed of lightweight, high-strength materials and may be joined to a supporting structure with threaded fasteners, allowing for efficient replacement of damaged panels. The container may also incorporate edge and corner joint designs that exceed panel strength and will not fail under reasonable probable blast pressures, yet require no special manufacturing or maintenance techniques.

    摘要: A heat sensitive case/nozzle interface is provided for an insensitive propellant-loaded munition such that the interface loses its structural integrity when high external heat is applied. The joint between a rocket case housing a rocket motor and nozzle forming the interface is received by an internal spring retainer positioned in a first groove in the case or nozzle in cooperation with a fusible material housed in an aligned second groove in the nozzle or case, respectively. A plurality of aligned openings extend into said first and second grooves. When the rocket is exposed to a high ambient temperature greater than melt temperature of the fusible material but lower than the auto-ignition temperature of the rocket, the fusible material melts and is forced through said holes by the spring retainer permitting the nozzle to separate from the case rendering the rocket motor safe if it auto-ignites.
