Abstract: Processes and systems form diluted brine from saturated brine without direct addition of soft or contaminated water in an oil and/or gas treatment facility. Water containing salt contaminants is fed to a forward osmosis membrane. The salt contaminants can be cations, anions, carbonate, bicarbonate and combinations thereof. A saturated brine solution is fed to a draw side of the forward osmosis membrane which allows water to pass from the feed side to the draw side and minimizes the passage of the salt contaminants from the feed side to the draw side. A diluted brine solution having a TDS concentration lower than a TDS concentration of the saturated brine solution is removed from the draw side outlet of the forward osmosis membrane. A concentrated contaminated water stream having a TDS concentration higher than a TDS concentration of the contaminated water feed is removed from the feed side outlet of the forward osmosis membrane.

Abstract: Disclosed are an apparatus and method for supporting a portion of a pipeline for conveying produced fluids in a subsea environment to facilitate movement of the portion of the pipeline over a seabed in response to stresses on the pipeline. The portion of the pipeline is supported on a rigid support structure having rotatable components that rotate about an axle attached to the rigid support structure such that the rigid support structure and the portion of the pipeline can move over the seabed. The apparatus and method eliminate the need for costly mud mats or suction piles to accommodate movement in the subsea pipeline and prevent pipeline walking. By facilitating movement of the portion of the pipeline, lateral deformation and axial displacement of the portion of the pipeline can be reduced or eliminated.

Abstract: Methods and systems are provided to enhance recovery of hydrocarbons from a formation by altering wettability at a surface of the formation towards more water-wet. One method includes: providing a formation; providing an aqueous stream for injecting into the formation; adding a reducing agent to the aqueous stream; and injecting the aqueous stream with the reducing agent into the formation to alter a surface charge of the surface of the formation to become more water-wet to enhance recovery of hydrocarbons from the formation. The reducing agent is responsive to characteristics of the formation, characteristics of brine of the formation, and characteristics of hydrocarbons of the formation. Also provided is a method to select a brine composition to be injected into a formation to alter wettability at a surface of the formation towards more water-wet to enhance recovery of hydrocarbons from the formation.

Abstract: A method of attaining a linguistic goal output of a process using a linguistic goal oriented decision making system, comprising setting the output value to a linguistic goal, and establishing a set of descriptive rules using historical data, wherein each descriptive rule has at least one variable, a decision variable, and at least one linguistic output value. The method further comprises grouping the set of descriptive rules into subsets of descriptive rules according to the linguistic output value of each descriptive rule and establishing decision rules based on comparing the grouped subsets of descriptive rules, the one or more decision rules describing a modification of a decision variable associated with at least one of the descriptive rules to affect the process.

Abstract: A method is described for seismic imaging of complex subsurface volumes using prismatic seismic energy. The method receives a seismic dataset and an earth model. The earth model is perturbed such that prismatic reflections will generate perturbed seismic amplitudes in a target area and seismic imaging is performed using the perturbed model. A second seismic image is generated using a second earth model; the second earth model may be the original earth model or a second perturbed model wherein the perturbation generates different seismic amplitudes in the target area. The two seismic images are differenced to generate a prismatic seismic image that can be used to identify geologic features that are poorly illuminated in conventional imaging. The method may be executed by a computer system.
