    Abstract: Aspects of the disclosure provide for a method of transmitting state information using free-space optical communication. The method includes using one or more processors of a first communication device to collect state information of the first communication device. A supervisor signal that carries the state information is transmitted from the first communication device along with a beacon beam in a first solid angle. The supervisor signal is a frequency different from the one or more frequencies of the beacon beam. When a communication link is established between the first communication device and a second communication device, a plurality of data packets is transmitted from the first communication device to the second communication device in a second solid angle smaller than the first solid angle. A subset of the plurality of data packets that do not carry client data carries the state information of the first communication device.

    Abstract: The subject matter of this specification generally relates to techniques for controlling a robot. In some implementations, a method includes determining a first target position of a first point located at the first end of the first link based on pose data for an end effector of a robot having a wrist offset. A second target position of a first joint connecting the first link to a second link is determined. A third target position of a second joint located at the first end of a third link is determined, including defining a first plane that includes the second target position of the first joint. A position and size of a circle that lies within a second plane is determined. A point on a perimeter of the circle is selected as the third target position. Movement data based on each position of each joint is provided to a control system.

An example method may include locating a foreground object disposed within a seed image, identifying an object class corresponding to the foreground object, and, based on the identified object class, determining a target value for an object property of the foreground object. The example method may also include applying a transformation function to transform the foreground object into a transformed object, where the transformation function modifies the object property of the foreground object from having an initial value to having the target value. The example method may further include transplanting the transformed object into a background image so as to produce an augmented image and augmenting an initial set of images with the augmented image so as to produce an augmented set of images for training a predictive model.

    Abstract: A flexible sensor that includes a printed circuit board (PCB), a capacitive structure on the PCB, and mechanical coupling sites. The PCB includes a slot extending from an outer edge of the PCB to an inner portion of the PCB, and the slot defines a first edge and a second edge facing the first edge. The first and second edges are separated by a gap when the PCB is in an unflexed state. The slot is configured to permit the PCB to flex so as to vary a relative position of the first edge with respect to the second edge. The capacitive structure on the PCB includes a first edge electrode on a portion of the first edge of the PCB, and a second edge electrode on a portion of a second edge of PCB. The second edge electrode is aligned with the first edge electrode across the slot.

    Abstract: Systems and methods for detecting low-loss eigenmodes of a spherical waveguide bounded by the Earth's surface and its ionosphere are disclosed. One or more eigenmodes of the Earth-ionosphere waveguide may be computed based on a mathematical model incorporating electrical properties of the terrestrial surface and plasma physics of the ionospheric layer. A transmitter apparatus may be used transmit electrical power into the Earth-ionosphere waveguide in the form of an electromagnetic wave, which may, in turn, be detected by a receiver apparatus remote from the transmitter apparatus. A coupling strength between the transmitted electromagnetic wave and the one or more eigenmodes may be determined by measuring power received by the receiver apparatus in the detected electromagnetic wave. By iteratively adjusting parameters of the transmitter apparatus, determining the coupling strength, and refining a quantitative description of the eigenmodes, the eigenmodes may be harnessed for wireless power transmission throughout the Earth-ionosphere waveguide.
