The WLAN communication method includes allowing a receiving station to receive a multi input multi output (MIMO) frame, allowing the receiving station to determine whether the MIMO frame is erroneous and whether the MIMO frame is destined for the receiving station, allowing the receiving station to generate a single input single output (SISO) acknowledgement (ACK) frame if the MIMO frame is not erroneous and is destined for the receiving station, and allowing the receiving station to transmit the SISO ACK frame to a sending station that has transmitted the MIMO frame.

The method includes obtaining transmission parameters of a transmitting station from a data transmission frame received from the transmitting station, searching a receiving station for transmission parameters which correspond to the transmission parameters of the transmitting station, determining the transmission rate of the control response frame according to transmission parameters of the receiving station if the transmission parameters corresponding to the transmission parameters of the transmitting station are found in the receiving station, and determining a maximum rate among a set of basic transmission rates to be the transmission rate of the control response frame if the transmission parameters corresponding to the transmission parameters of the transmitting station are not found in the receiving station.

Provided are a method and apparatus which can reduce the possibility of collision with other frames when transmitting a broadcast/multicast frame in a wireless local area network (LAN) following a Distributed Coordination Function (DCF) rule, thereby ensuring reliable transmission. The wireless communication method for sending or receiving a predetermined frame through contention between an access point and one or more stations according to DCF is characterized in that the access point uses the shortest of interframe space (IFS) intervals for access to a wireless medium. Therefore, when wireless LAN STAs operate in a DCF mode, the possibility of collision during broadcast or multicast frame transmission can be reduced while adopting conventional CSMA/CA mechanism, thereby improving reliability in successful frame transmission.

In the WLAN, information that allows a plurality of hearing legacy stations and a plurality of hearing HT stations which receive a data frame having an HT format transmitted by a transmitting HT station to fairly contend for use of a medium is transmitted as a frame having a format that can be interpreted by all the legacy HT stations. Therefore, the legacy stations can contend for a medium under the same conditions as the HT stations.

A method and apparatus for determining an ACK frame appropriate for a wireless local area network (LAN) environment where high throughput stations and legacy stations with different data transmission capabilities coexist to acknowledge the receipt of a transmission frame. The method and apparatus enable each station to access a medium normally in the wireless LAN environment and complement a carrier sensing method. The method includes determining types of stations on a wireless local area network, determining the ACK frame for acknowledging the receipt of the transmission frame on the wireless local area network according to the result of determination, and notifying a corresponding station on the wireless local area network of the determined ACK frame.

The data transmission method for transmitting data from an access point on a wireless LAN includes allocating a sub-contention free period in which 802.11 based legacy stations and high throughput (HT) stations with multiple antennas obtain a channel use right through polling, and an HT contention period in which the HT stations can obtain a channel use right through contention. According to the method and devices, when there are no objects of polling in a contention free period, the period, in which the HT stations can obtain the channel use right though contention, is made to begin earlier such that without wasting the channel use period, the channel can be used flexibly.
