摘要: A system and method that combine an array of fast under wire water weigh sensors with a scanning system provides an accurate measurement of the entire sheet down to 1 in. by 1 in. resolution. Because CD profiles are obtained instantaneously, MD and CD variations are completely decoupled, even if CD profiles are taken at longer intervals apart. The technique allows monitoring the basis weight of a sheet of material that is formed in a process that employs a de-watering machine that includes a water permeable moving fabric supporting wet stock and a dry end which technique includes the steps of: a) positioning an array of water weight sensor elements (array) underneath and adjacent to the fabric wherein the array is positioned in a cross direction to the moving fabric; b) positioning a scanning sensor at the dry end to measure the dry basis weight of the sheet of material; c) operating the machine and measuring the water weights of the sheet of material with the array and measuring the dry basis weight of the sheet of material with the scanning sensor at the dry end; d) developing a functional relationship between water weight of the sheet as measured by the array and the basis weight of the sheet which is formed after being substantially de-watered; end; and e) periodically, adjusting the functional relationship using readings from the scanning sensor to compensate for variations due to process parameters. The technique can further include the step of correlating positional readings of the scanning sensor with measurements from the corresponding element in the array to obtain separate calibration for each individual element of the array and step e comprises adjusting the functional relationship obtained in step d and the calibration obtained in to compensate for variations due to process parameters.

摘要: A nuclear gauge for making measurements of traveling webs in continuous sheet-making processes includes an enclosure, an encapsulated nuclear source, and a wheel-like member mounted in the enclosure means for carrying the encapsulated nuclear source between two angularly-displaced positions. The first of the angularly-displaced positions is the position where the encapsulated nuclear source makes measurements of a web that travels past the gauge and the second position is the location where the encapsulated nuclear source faces a sidewall of the enclosure means at a location remote from the first position. The nuclear gauge also has an aperture which is formed through the enclosure for providing a window through which the encapsuled nuclear source, when located in the first position, can emit radiation onto a web that travels past the window.

摘要: A sheet tension measuring device is disclosed for measuring the tension of a moving sheet wherein a moving sheet is accurately positioned with pinchers at 2 spaced locations. The sheet is deflected between these pinchers from its nominal straight line path, and the amount of deflection and deflecting force are measured. The pinchers iron out any wrinkles in the sheet as the moving sheet slides through the pinchers. Sheet tension is computed based upon the measured deflection force and deflection distance. The resulting measurements of local sheet tension are used to correct nondestructive sheet strength measurements. A device and method are also disclosed for nondestructively determining the sheet strength and the extensional stiffness of the sheet in the machine direction and in the cross-direction.

摘要: A sensor for sensing a quality of a sheet, such as a paper sheet, related to elastic modulus and bending stiffness as it is being made including a sheet support in the form of a ring and a free running wheel, which depresses the paper into the center of the ring as the paper passes over it. A force transducer mounted to the wheel senses the force of the deflected paper on the wheel and provides a measure of a characteristic of the paper related to its elastic modulus and being stiffness. Alternatively, or in addition, a displacement sensor may be used to sense the distance that the sheet is displaced by the wheel into the ring. These factors, together with basis weight, thickness and paper velocity may be used to determine the strength of the paper on a continuous basis.
